Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-5-2018

New York Tribune, November 5, 1918:

“There will be a double world’s series next fall,” [Dodgers pitcher Clarence] Mitchell has just written from France, “for the public will demand it and the army and navy will insist upon it.

“Over here we haven’t any doubt about the war’s end in plenty of time for the big leagues to start their schedules, but we do not expect to be released by Uncle Sam in time to get back in the game…the club that can win out in the army and navy competition will be the best ...

Analytics guru Sig Mejdal leaves Astros | Houston Astros

Interesting.

Sig Mejdal, the former NASA engineer and blackjack dealer who spearheaded the analytical team that helped the Astros win their first World Series last year, has allowed his contract with the Astros to expire as he pursues other opportunities, MLB.com has learned.

Mejdal, who served this year as special assistant to the general manager, process development, told MLB.com on Sunday the decision to leave the Astros was his alone. He joined the club in 2012 after following president of ...

OTP 2018 2018 Nov 5 - The Trump dilemma hits the Boston Red Sox amid a wave of White House boycotts in sports

The Boston Red Sox, fresh off their historic World Series win, are the latest team to be faced with the Trump dilemma.

The team’s manager Alex Cora said that the Sox haven’t decided whether they will visit the White House if they’re invited by Trump, adding that he wants to use the team’s platform in the right way, according to the Associated Press.

All eyes are on the Cubs and their money as the general manager meetings begin Monday

A free-agent freeze dominated the baseball landscape until weeks before the start of the 2018 season, causing many to wonder whether the smell of collusion was in the air.

And with the likes of Yu Darvish, Jake Arrieta, J.D. Martinez, Eric Hosmer and Mike Moustakas among the ranks of unsigned free agents in mid-January, there was good reason to wonder if the game finally was clamping down on outrageous spending.

“I think what you’re seeing is a lot of teams out there would rather have dry ...

Letter To Patch: Some Major League Baseball Retirees Go Without

Did you know there are 641 retired men who played Major League Baseball (MLB) who aren’t receiving MLB pensions?

The league – which does not have to address this matter unless the union representing today’s players, the Major League Baseball Players’ Association (MLBPA), broaches it in collective bargaining negotiations—recently announced that its revenue was up 325 percent from 1992, and that it has made $500 million since 2015. What’s more, the average value of each of the 30 clubs is up ...

Why the Cardinals and Giants could enter the Bryce Harper free agency sweepstakes

You know the deal: Free agent outfielder Bryce Harper, because he’s still just 26 years of age and has MVP upside, is likely going to wind up signing the largest contract in MLB history this offseason. His left-handed power and patience at the plate—plus the possibility that he’s pre-prime—mean he’s of interest to almost any team that thinks it can afford him. As for specifics, you can reportedly add the names of two traditional National League powers to his list of likely suitors.

First, ...

SNY: Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen: ‘I think that you can’t be afraid to win’

In Brodie Van Wagenen’s case, he wasn’t the candidate that tried to win over the Wilpons by saying exactly what they would want to hear. Instead, he told them what they needed to hear.

“They needed to hear that there was a lack of confidence in the organization,” Van Wagenen told The Post’s Steve Serby in an in-depth Q&A. “There was a lack of belief that they could win. And I wanted to change that narrative.”

That’s nice to hear.  Screw it, #ImWithBrodie

Red Sox, Braves highlight Gold Glove winners

Major League Baseball’s top defensive players were honored with the unveiling of the 2018 Rawlings Gold Glove Awards on Sunday night.

Plenty of mainstays were joined by exciting newcomers in this year’s field of finalists for the Gold Glove, which were determined by a combination of votes submitted by Major League managers and coaches and a sabermetric index provided by the Society for American Baseball Research (SABR).

SABR? I hardly know’er!

Schmuck: Orioles’ executive search, MASN hearing make November a critical month for franchise

Baseball’s free-agent market opened for business this weekend and the Orioles still appear to be a few weeks away from naming a new baseball operations chief, but don’t be alarmed.

This was never going to be a big free-agent offseason for the Orioles, so the deliberate search for Dan Duquette’s replacement — and eventually a new manager — isn’t as time sensitive as it might be under different circumstances.

An industry source told The Baltimore Sun that John and Louis Angelos are ...

Why Mookie Betts is the perfect player, and other fun stats

Before there was Baseball-Reference.com, there was “The Bill James Handbook,” the annual statistical compilation of the baseball season. The “Handbook” still exists, and it’s still wonderful—600 pages of stats and essays and delightful nuggets of information.

As always, the bulk of the book is the player register—career numbers for every player who played in the majors in 2018—but there are sections on managers, team defense, ballpark ratings, the Hall of Fame, leaderboards, pitchers’ ...

The starting pitching market will be crazy even without Clayton Kershaw

Free agency has arrived in Major League Baseball, which means we’re off and running with what could go down as the craziest offseason in a long time. That’s despite a potentially chaotic element being settled on Friday.

Clayton Kershaw will not reach the open market. The elite left-hander has elected to remain with the Los Angeles Dodgers after declining his two-year option worth nearly $70 million and re-signing for three years at $93 million.

Kershaw staying with the Dodgers was always ...

A month after dismissing executive vice president Dan Duquette and manager Buck Showalter following the worst season in franchise history, the Orioles’ search for a new individual to lead their baseball operations department continues.

Jason Heyward chooses not to opt-out of Cubs deal that still owes him $100M

Jason Heyward isn’t walking away from more than $100 million. According to the Chicago Sun Times, the outfielder let the opt-out deadline pass for his contact with the Chicago Cubs and will stay with the team for at least another year.

The opt-out is part of the eight-year, $184 million contract Heyward, 29, signed with the Cubs in 2016. He has five years and $106 million left on the deal.

The decision to decline the opt-out was probably a no-brainer for Heyward, though many on the North ...

Former Marlin Justin Wayne Sentenced To 4 Years In Prison For Con Involving Drug Addicts’ Urine

Justin Wayne was a bust. The fifth overall pick in the 2000 MLB draft, Wayne appeared in just 26 games over three seasons with the Florida Marlins, putting up an ERA over 6 (but earning a World Series ring along the way). Thursday in federal court West Palm Beach, Fla., Wayne was sentenced to 46 months in ...

World Series trophy broken by flying beer can, now fixed

We wrote yesterday about how Mookie Betts had a bit of trouble catching an inbound beer can during the Red Sox’ World Series parade. That can, it seems, was not the biggest problem.

Other fans on the parade route threw cans at players and Red Sox officials, with at least six getting arrested for disorderly conduct. One of them was nabbed after hitting a team photographer, Jason Varitek’s wife and Alex Cora’s daughter. None of them were hurt.

The same cannot be said for the World Series ...

Will Freeze or Frenzy Face 2018 Free Agent Class?

The flame of baseball’s Hot Stove League turns to “high” when the sun comes up Saturday. That’s when free agents are free to sign with any team.

But neither players nor teams are in any rush to sign.

The hundred-or-so players whose contracts have expired are just the first wave in a periodic deluge of athletes who can sell themselves to any team at any price.
