TV Simpsons documentary about ‘Homer at the Bat’ episode to air Sunday

Twenty-five years ago, with the sum of one million dollars on the line, Mr. Burns ordered Smithers to assemble the greatest softball team ever seen so he could beat a rival nuclear power plant’s squad. (“Scour the professional ranks! The American League, the National League, the Negro League!”) Enter: Ken Griffey, Jr., Roger Clemens, Wade Boggs, Don Mattingly, and other MLB studs, though it would be Homer’s head that proved to be the championship game’s MVP. Today, season 3’s ...

How the mob, politics, a burlesque dancer and The Babe shaped the ‘32 World Series

There’s a story here. This building used to be the Sheffield House Hotel, and before that it was the Hotel Carlos, as the baroque carvings on the entryway still announce. All of that, though, was before a reported 53 code violations ended the building’s days as a single-room occupancy hotel. It’s now luxury condos.
Back in the 1930s, the Hotel Carlos was a popular choice for Cubs players seeking a place to live during the season. Shortstop Billy Jurges, who toiled for the Cubs from 1931 through ...

Angell: Yanks Get Even

C. C. will become a free agent this year, and it’s not a certainty that the Yankees will come through with an expensive new contract. He’s a different pitcher these days from what he was when he arrived, in 2009, as a high-strikeout star from the Brewers, and now thrives on angles and corners and a commanding elder presence. He went 14–5 in the regular season, but, like others, I most want to hold onto the look of him out there: the tent-like uni top, the billowing pajama pants. His cap ...

The story behind Los Angeles Dodgers utility man Chris Taylor’s unbelievable season

Adding to the mystery, I’d been told that spectral forces outside the big league ecosystem are responsible for transforming Taylor, 27, from a 4A—too good for Triple-A, not good enough for the majors—player with the Mariners into a revelation. It’s a little dicey; big league coaches are proprietary and for the most part conventional. There’s an ongoing jiu-jitsu between them and the growing number of individual gurus whose teachings often begin on the margins and stray from there.

My search ...

ALCS Notebook: Cashman on Yankee Analytics, Luhnow on Hiring Hinch | FanGraphs Baseball

He might actually be the perfect fit in Boston after all.

On Monday, Hinch called Alex Cora (a former infielder) “the hottest managerial candidate on the planet and deservedly so.” Shortly before he shared that hard-to-argue-with opinion, Carlos Beltran weighed in on the Astros’ bench coach:

“Alex brings a lot to the table. He’s a guy that always is looking for information that he could use against the opposite team [and] he provides that information to the players. He has good ...

Do the Cubs realize how badly the Dodgers insulted them on national TV? - Chicago Tribune

It’s not the end of Snarktober, but you can see it from here:

Do the Cubs know enough to be insulted by what the Dodgers pulled in Game 3 of the National League Championship Series?

Do the Cubs know they got pantsed on their home field on national TV?

Do the Cubs realize the Dodgers have so little respect for their offense that starting pitcher Yu Darvish batted with the bases loaded in the sixth inning of a two-run game?

The Cubs certainly didn’t respond as if they knew they were ...

He does?

—TBS analyst Ron Darling seems to have an intense dislike of the Dodgers. I wonder why? Maybe someone still remembers Game 7 of the 1988 NLCS? The mighty New York Mets were favored to slaughter the Dodgers. But what happened in Game 7. Oh, yeah, the Dodgers won. Who was the losing pitcher…. Let me check ….. Oh yeah, it was Ron Darling.

The Astros will have the right starter on the mound to kill the Yankees’ momentum.

Three years after knocking them from the playoffs — and less than a week removed from dominating them again — Astros ace Dallas Keuchel will be asked to stop the Yankees from inching closer to another improbable playoff comeback Wednesday in Game 5 of the ALCS.

Pittsburgh Gazette Times, October 18, 1917:

When Edward Barrow, president of the International League, was asked [yesterday] about the rumor that he was to succeed President Ban Johnson as head of the American League for the duration of the war. Mr. Barrow said he could not discuss the matter at this time. He admitted that Johnson, however, was contemplating joining the Army and was anxious to get a commission in the Quartermaster’s Department.

Barrow didn’t get the gig. Instead, he managed the ...

Dodgers aren’t showing any shortcomings even without Corey Seager | LA Times

Corey who?

On the morning of the opener of the National League Championship Series, the Dodgers announced that All-Star shortstop Corey Seager would not play because of injury. Cubs pitcher Jon Lester likened the impact on the Dodgers to how the Cubs might have been hurt had they lost Kris Bryant, the defending NL most valuable player. ESPN analyst Dan Szymborski calculated that the injury had reduced the Dodgers’ chance to win the series from 57.0% to 49.9% — in other words, “Dodgers ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 10-17-2017

Harrisburg Telegraph, October 17, 1917:

The Chicago White Sox, winners of the 1917 world series, defeated the New York Giants in an exhibition game yesterday, 6 to 4, before 6,000 soldiers from Camp Mills, at Mineola. The soldiers were members of the 165th United States Infantry, most of them New Yorkers, and of the 149th Artillery, composed of men from Illinois.

The Sox finished off the Giants in six before the two teams played this exhibition for American soldiers.

The Cubs could really use 2016 Javier Baez right about now - Chicago Cubs Blog- ESPN

Will Almora’s play push Kyle Schwarber out of Chicago? Schwarber really should be a part-time catcher/full-time DH.

“You’re not going to be perfect,” teammate Albert Almora Jr. said. “You’re going to have your week or two that you’re not feeling at your best. I know I went through it. The way he’s handling it, he’s not bringing anybody down. On the contrary, I actually saw—one of the first guys I saw when I looked into the dugout when I hit the home run [in Game 1] was him cheering.”

Astros’ Lance McCullers will start Game 4 of ALCS - Houston Chronicle

Hinch chose McCullers over Brad Peacock, who had the superior regular season on the whole. Essentially, the Astros are betting on McCullers’ upside. Peacock also has experience out of the bullpen and can be the first pitcher warm if McCullers encounters trouble.
“He’s a really good pitcher,” Hinch said when asked about McCullers. “He’s got really electrifying stuff, some of the best stuff in the big leagues.
“Getting him in a normal routine, normal warmup into the game, big-time breaking ball, ...

ALCS Game 3: The mistake pitch that led to the Aaron Judge of old for one at-bat

Judge had a great all-around game. He did a great job getting to the inside fastball on his homer. It was a good job of hitting.

Finally, in his second at-bat of the night, he got it: 93 mph, high for most but right at his belt, inside but not so far he couldn’t whip around the head of his 35-inch, 33-ounce bat, the kind of pitch that can change a series. And not because the three-run home run Judge topspun into the left-field stands at Yankee Stadium had a particularly profound effect on the ...

CE: After this past season, how close do you think you guys are compared to 2016 to being the next winning Reds team, and how does that color your offseason plans?

Breaking down Todd Frazier’s ‘cheap’ Yankee Stadium home run from ALCS Game 3

Plenty of folks will grumble about it being a Yankee Stadium cheapie, but it’s worth noting that Frazier’s home run actually did travel a longer distance than the homer Carlos Correa hit in Game 2—and besides, it wasn’t anywhere near being the cheapest hit of the inning:

With His Bat and His Glove, Aaron Judge Lifts Yankees Past Astros | NYT

The Yankees, who had the best home record in the American League during the regular season, continued to look like a different team at a re-energized Yankee Stadium, where they have won all four games in the postseason. The Astros, who played two airtight games in Houston over the weekend, seemed to feel as uncomfortable in the Bronx as the Minnesota Twins did in the wild-card game and the Cleveland Indians did in the division-series round.

“Our players are used to this field,” said ...

EXPANSION COULD TRIGGER REALIGNMENT, LONGER POSTSEASON

There seems to be a building consensus that baseball will soon be headed to a 32-team configuration.

Lol, wut? I thought the consensus was that there were already two too many teams (Athletics, Rays) and that expansion is off the table until those teams find a home, anyway:

One proposal would be to geographically restructure into four divisions, which would create a major reduction in travel, particularly for teams on the East Coast and West Coast, and add to the natural rivalries by not ...
