Tigers Close To Re-Signing Victor Martinez

Shop smart…

The Tigers are close to a four-year deal with Victor Martinez, FOX Sports’ Ken Rosenthal reports (Twitter link)... Re-signing Martinez was said to be Detroit’s top priority this offseason, despite the potential loss of other key free agents Max Scherzer and Torii Hunter. The 35-year-old Martinez enjoyed perhaps the finest offensive season of his 12-year career in 2014, slashing .335/.409/.565 with a career-high 32 homers. He led the league in both on-base percentage and OPS…

SB Nation 2014 Off-season Simulation debriefing

Have you ever thought your team’s GM made a stupid trade? Paid too much for a free agent? Wish you had the opportunity to run the team more effectively? I gave the opportunity to 30 fans to run their team how they saw fit in an Offseason Simulation, cramming an entire winter of transactions into four days. I gave each team a recommended budget and asked them to negotiate with each other on trades, and with me on free agents.

The following is a summary of what transpired over one week. You ...

The future of treating ACL tears: Less invasive surgery

Nearly three decades ago, a man on crutches changed the course of Dr. Martha Murray’s life. The two met at a party at Stanford University, where Murray was a graduate student in engineering. They talked about the man’s recent anterior cruciate ligament, or ACL, tear. When he told Murray his reconstruction surgery would require a tendon graft and holes drilled into his thighbone and shinbone, she was shocked.

Murray wondered why surgeons couldn’t simply sew the two ends of the torn ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 11-12-2014

Milwaukee Journal, November 12, 1914:

President James E. Gaffney of the Braves yesterday denied a report that his ball park had been sold to a Chicago mail order establishment as a site for a shoe factory, but admitted that the grounds were in the market. He said he expected to locate soon on an attractive home for the world’s championship next year.

The ballpark in question was South End Grounds, which indeed saw its last Braves game in August 1914. The team spent part of the 1915 season at ...

Mets exploring options for shortstop - Newsday

Sorry, the Diamondbacks don’t have “earth shattering” talent at shortstop.

The Diamondbacks also have shortstops to offer and have received calls on Didi Gregorius. But to consider moving a shortstop, GM Dave Stewart said he’d need an offer that he considers “earth shattering.”

Offseason already seeing Astros talk about a win-now approach - Ultimate Astros

“Obviously, we’re going to give Jonathan every chance to make this club,” Luhnow said. “We’re going to give Matt every chance to make this club. But we’re not going to hand them those positions. They’re going to have to earn those positions. Because we’re at the point now where the development at the big leagues is behind us, and this is about producing. And if they don’t produce, still both those guys have options. Both of them could end up back in (Class AAA) Fresno.

Agent for Andrew Miller says left-handed setup man ready for closer’s role - ESPN

Closers get paid.

“I think Andrew’s evolution in the bullpen and his numbers this year fortify the belief in baseball that he’s a closer-in-waiting—and maybe the time for waiting is over,’’ Rodgers said Tuesday from the MLB general managers’ meetings.

Sources: Cubs in talks to acquire Nationals’ Jordan Zimmermann | Chicago Sun-Times

Another report says the clubs aren’t dealing. Brett Anderson would be a great buy-low pickup for a smart team.

Zimmermann, 28, would be a younger, potentially less-expensive alternative to the higher-end free agents on the market this off-season, though the player package to acquire him would have to include at least one of their touted young middle infielders, sources say.

One source said the teams have enough mutual interest that names have been discussed. Another said he expected the Cubs to ...

Boston Red Sox making big push to sign free agent Pablo Sandoval - ESPN Boston

While there have been reports, most notably from Buster Olney of ESPN.com, that the San Francisco Giants are optimistic about re-signing Pablo Sandoval and that a deal could happen soon, an executive with another major league club said Tuesday that the Red Sox are “all in” on the free-agent third baseman and are making a big push to sign him.

Along with La Russa, Showalter is one of just two skippers to win with three different teams.
Williams, meanwhile, made some history of his own, taking home the award in his first season at the helm. He is now the fourth rookie manager to win the award, joining Hal Lanier (1986 Astros), ...

Bullpen help not a high priority for Cubs - Chicago Tribune

Starters still matter.

The San Francisco Giants won the World Series this year with a rotation that ranked 16th in the majors, beating a Kansas City Royals team whose rotation finished 11th overall.

So why spend over $100 million on a free-agent starter when an average rotation combined with a few shutdown relievers in the seventh, eighth and ninth seemingly works just as well?

The Mets’ signing of Michael Cuddyer may mark the first of several front-office moves - MLB - SI.com

Whether Cuddyer is overpaid by a little or a lot is debatable. Suggesting that the 15th pick of the first round isn’t valuable because that particular pick hasn’t produced a plethora of all stars isn’t convincing.

That back-of-the-envelope math is without considering the cost of the lost draft pick. In signing a qualifying offer free agent, the Mets will forfeit the 15th pick of the 2015 draft. While that would seem to be a bad thing for a team on a rebuilding path, the reality is that the slot ...

Can he play shortstop too?

Listen to Jay Alou — agent for free agent outfielder Yasmany Tomas –€“ for his first two sentences and you’€™ll come away with a dose of reality.

“I don’€™t see a need. They have their outfielders,” Alou said when asked at the general managers’€™ meetings Monday about the Red Sox‘€™ interest in the 23-year-old slugger.

But then, in mid statement, came the push.

“I mean, he could play third base. Everybody could use some pop,”€ Alou ...

Blue Jays won’t let others dictate off-season - Sportsnet.ca

The part about the Jays signing Martin because they “have enough positions in flux” so he can move to another position is funny.

As I reported last week the Blue Jays will take a shot at signing free-agent catcher Russell Martin, who is said by some industry insiders to already be leaning in the Chicago Cubs direction. Martin wants a contract worth between $75-$80 million over five years, similar to or a little more than the deal Brian McCann received from the New York Yankees last winter. An ...

Baseball exec predicts Lester will return to Boston - Boston Red Sox Blog - ESPN Boston

The “well-connected baseball executive” sounds like someone in the Red Sox camp. The executive sounds like he has some wishful thinking. I don’t see Lester settling for $20 million per year.

But Monday night, a well-connected baseball executive who has had conversations on the subject with the Red Sox, predicted that Boston will indeed re-sign Lester, and may make an exception in Lester’s case to their pledge not to offer a long-term deal to pitchers north of 30 years old.

How high would the ...

Rick Hahn expects White Sox to be rumor-mill fixture this winter | CSN Chicago

According to the quotes in the article, the White Sox will either sign a big contract or they won’t. Thanks for the insight!

But the White Sox general manager expects his club to be prominently mentioned in baseball gossip this offseason if only because of their position; they could have $40 million to spend with multiple upgrades needed. Not only that, the White Sox intend to kick a lot of tires to see what’s out there.

Yankees intrigued by Elvis Andrus in search for Jeter’s heir | New York Post

Prospects are prospects. Will Profar ever pan out or will injuries derail his future?

Andrus’ eight-year, $120 million extension does not even begin until next season and runs through at least 2022. Texas would love to unload that deal as it searches this market for starting pitching. The Rangers can go inexpensive in the middle infield with some combination of Rougned Odor, Jurickson Profar and Luis Sardinas. However, they would be more comfortable doing that if they knew for sure Profar was ...
