Indians deal for ace reliever Brad Hand

The Indians have acquired All-Star closer Brad Hand and right-handed reliever Adam Cimber from the Padres for catcher Francisco Mejia, their top prospect and the No. 15 prospect in all of baseball according to MLB Pipeline.

Hand and Cimber should help bolster a bullpen that ranks among the worst in baseball this season—Cleveland’s bullpen ERA of 5.28 is the second-highest in the Majors behind only Kansas City (5.45)—for a club with championship aspirations. When the Indians reached the World ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-19-2018

Toledo News-Bee, July 19, 1918:

Baseball on a wholesale scale has been presented to followers of the Chicago Cubs the last three days. In this short time 55 innings were played by the National League leaders. They staged a double header of nine rounds on Tuesday, put over the 21-inning game on Wednesday, and battled 16 periods on Thursday. This is a major league record.

That’s more than 18 innings per day. Great for the fans, less so for the players.

Wilson Ramos Placed On DL, Expected To Be Sidelined Beyond Non-Waiver Trade Deadline

With teams like the Nationals and Astros at least exploring the market for catching upgrades, the Rays were a near-certainty to cash in on Ramos and land a new prospect or two to add to their minor league ranks. That now looks unlikely — at least in the month of July. It’s possible that Ramos could return at some point in August, though it’s doubtful that he’d clear waivers. Still, that doesn’t necessarily preclude the possibility of a deal coming together.

Manny Machado blockbuster makes Dodgers the NL’s team to beat

Machado is expected to play shortstop for the Dodgers, as he did with the Orioles, although shortstop actually hasn’t been a problem. Seager played his last game on April 29; since then, with Chris Taylor getting most of the starts (plus a few from Enrique Hernandez), Dodgers shortstops rank fifth in the majors in wOBA. The bigger issue has been second base, where Logan Forsythe and Chase Utley haven’t provided much production and the Dodgers rank 20th in the majors in wOBA.

Adding Machado ...

Rob Manfred: Mike Trout limits his popularity because he won’t market himself

So, Trout should consider self-marketing?

“Player marketing requires one thing for sure—the player,” Manfred said earlier in the day. “You cannot market a player passively. You can’t market anything passively. You need people to engage with those to whom you are trying to market in order to have effective marketing. We are very interested in having our players more engaged and having higher-profile players and helping our players develop their individual brand. But that involves the player ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-18-2018

Bridgeport Times, July 18, 1918:

The 1918 season’s record for long games was established [in Chicago] yesterday afternoon when the Cubs defeated the Phillies, 2 to 1, in a thrilling contest that ran twenty-one innings before George Tyler, the famous Chicago southpaw, won the verdict over “Mule” Watson, the Phillies’ comparatively unknown righthander.

Both Tyler and Watson threw complete games. Watson’s career through July 17, 1918: 339.1 IP, 3.10 ERA. Watson’s career after throwing 20 innings in ...

Aaron Judge — Huge Talent, Phenomenal Trade Bait

...at the moment there lies an opportunity for Cashman to test his courage as never before.

That would mean jumping in with both feet to snatch Manny Machado from Baltimore and then getting on the phone with his good friend Omar Minaya, part of a triumvirate making baseball decisions for the Mets, and telling him he doesn’t want Jacob deGrom or Noah Syndergaard, the two most coveted starting pitchers on the market.

He wants them both.

And to land them he’s willing to (gulp) send Aaron ...

10 Years Ago, Two Trades Broke The Mold For MLB Deadline Deals

This summer marks the 10th anniversary of not one but two exceptions. In July 2008, CC Sabathia went from the Cleveland Indians to the Milwaukee Brewers and Manny Ramirez from the Boston Red Sox to the Los Angeles Dodgers. Both teams needed help to reach the playoffs; both teams got it, and then some. Over the second half of what became a riotously entertaining season, Sabathia and Ramirez laid waste to the National League, vaulted up its leaderboards, and—briefly, gloriously—put a dent in ...

Why the Cubs and Yankees Should Swap Tyler Chatwood and Sonny Gray

The biggest reason this perfectly reasonable idea wouldn’t happen is that Chatwood is guaranteed more money, but I like the idea behind it, at least:

Gray is still getting decent or better swinging-strike rates on his primary pitches. His velocity is pretty stable this year — and might actually be up a tick over last year — so there’s no obvious explanation for Gray’s struggles except for the change in approach he adopted when he came to New York. As for Chatwood, we knows he’s ...

Orioles have deal in place for Manny Machado, working through trade specifics

It is not yet known which team Machado will be traded to, but the Los Angeles Dodgers and Philadelphia Phillies have been invested in their pursuit of the All-Star shortstop.

Fancred reported earlier Tuesday that the Dodgers had emerged as the leading contender to acquire Machado but also noted that the talks were fluid and identified the Phillies, Milwaukee Brewers and Arizona Diamondbacks as contenders with an “outside chance” to land the four-time All-Star.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 7-17-2018

Washington Times, July 17, 1918:

Barney Dreyfuss, president of the Pirates, is against [National League] President Tener’s stand in the Scott Perry case.

“There will be no baseball war over the Perry case,” said Barney today. “For one, I shall not support Tener’s position. The only thing to do is to reorganize the National Commission, something that has been necessary for years.”

And so began the slow pulling of the rug out from under Tener as the NL President. The New York Sun reports most of ...

9 Pirates 7, Brewers 6 (10): Two late leads slip away

The Brewers ended the first half with six consecutive losses, getting swept in the five-game series by the Pirates. The bullpen’s inability to hold leads ruined a great day by Brett Phillips, who tripled in three runs in the eighth and singled in another in the 10th after being summoned from the minors.

A brutal end of the pre-break part of the season for Milwaukee. Meanwhile, the Pirates have joined the back end of the wild card race and start a tour of beautiful Ohio on Friday.

OTP 2018 July 16: Why Does President Trump Balk At Attending Baseball Games?

As the World Cup finale plays in my living room, it’s seems like the right time to reflect on “America’s pastime” – baseball – and its curious standing these days.

The sport gets it close-up on Tuesday night, when the Major-League All-Star Game is played in the nation’s capital. President Trump is not expected to be attendance, though he easily could zip over to the festivities upon his return from his meeting with Vladimir Putin.

Is Chase Utley a Hall of Famer?

Jumping ahead somewhat to the meat of the argument…

According to Baseball Reference, Utley’s career 65.6 WAR ranks 15th all-time at his position, and is higher than Hall of Fame second basemen Jackie Robinson, Craig Biggio, Joe Gordon, Bobby Doerr, Johnny Evers, Nellie Fox, Billy Herman, Tony Lazzeri, Bill Mazeroski, Bid McPhee and Red Schoendienst.

Using that measurement, Utley has been more valuable than 11 of the 20 second basemen already in the Hall of Fame. Lou Whitaker, Bobby Grich, ...

The work in the last month has capped the climax and the slogan heard among the boys is ‘never again.’ The attendance has dropped to such proportions that it takes a man with a powerful magnifying glass to see the crowd. The fans have quit Cincinnati.

Don’t fix baseball, even if it’s broken

Today’s all-or-nothing baseball is too one-dimensional. There are too many strikeouts… Also, too many of the hits are home runs. It was imprecise for Crash Davis (Kevin Costner’s character in “Bull Durham”) to say that strikeouts are “fascist,” but he was right that they are “boring,” a… And “on average, you have to wait [3 minutes and 45 seconds] between balls put in play — 41 seconds longer between movement than 20 years ago.” Steals (hence pitchouts), sacrifice bunts, ...
