red sox - Has the real Hanley Ramirez stood up? - WEEI | Rob Bradford

If he’s hitting .195 in June, the Boston media will wear thin.

Pederson letting play make case for starting job | dodgers.com

I’ve seen him play a lot this spring. His defense is better than I realized. I’d be shocked not to see him start the season in centerfield for the Dodgers.

“We think Joc’s really good defensively,” Mattingly said. “He gets good jumps on the ball. He’s shown us that he knows where to throw it. As far as game awareness, outs and situations, he’s been good.
“Really, his whole game is like that, from the standpoint of the way he runs the bases. He’s shown us game awareness and that’s really what ...

Hale discusses state of the D-backs | dbacks.com

Hale: I think the toughest thing is what we’re going to do with Yasmany Tomas. Will he be at third or in the outfield? And then even there, we have so many good outfielders. I think that’s one of our issues. [Jake] Lamb has played well. He hasn’t played great where we can just say, ‘Yas, we don’t need you.’ We’ve got Drury, too, who is waiting in the wings. We’ve got [David] Peralta, [Ender] Inciarte, [Mark] Trumbo, [A.J.] Pollock in the outfield. I think it’s a tough decision, and it could be ...

The midway point … « Gonzo and ‘The Show’

Second base really is wide open:
And I’m not really sure if that’s good. Thing is, none of the three candidates for the everyday role have really stuck out. Grant Green (7-for-23) hasn’t looked comfortable defensively, Josh Rutledge (7-for-31, eight strikeouts) hasn’t hit and Johnny Giavotella (5-for-20) hasn’t done anything to wow you on either end. One guy who has looked to me is Taylor Featherston, who’s being groomed for the utility-infield job. I like his defense, I like his ...

Roger Clemens reaches settlement with his ex-trainer Brian McNamee - Newsday

Something I just learned.

The actual settlement amount, which was not revealed, will be paid by AIG, which is Clemens’ homeowners insurance, Clemens attorney Chip Babcock said. He said it’s standard for homeowners policies to include coverage for defamation lawsuits.

Want to play in the Minor Leagues? Here’s how | MiLB.com News | The Official Site of Minor League Baseball

See even teams read Baseball America.

Independent league teams are not affiliated with MLB or Minor League Baseball, but they can often be a good venue for players to get experience and potentially get noticed by a big league scout. Red Sox outfielder Daniel Nava became a memorable success story when he joined an indy club, hit .371 and was ranked by Baseball America as the best prospect in the independent leagues. The Red Sox saw his name on the list and purchased his contract in 2008, leading ...

Zack Wheeler’s agent: Pitcher wasn’t mishandled by New York Mets - ESPN New York

Despite the external criticism, Abbott clearly stated he has no qualms with the Mets’ handling of Wheeler. He told the Record later Wednesday that Wheeler had been diagnosed with a bone spur, but there was no indication from medical professionals that the UCL would be impacted by continuing to pitch.

Wieters shut down from catching due to elbow tendinitis | MLB.com

“He took infield. He had ups, downs, he had throws between innings. That was challenging and it was at a different speed,” Showalter said. “I don’t care what you do on back fields, where there’s just a different adrenaline flow, a different arm speed. There’s throwing the ball down between innings. He said he felt a little .. achy-ness, with a couple, maybe two out of seven throws. I think we don’t want it—and Matt doesn’t want it—to mushroom into something bigger than hopefully it is.”

Some NL exec would start a team with Adam Jones over Mike Trout

The story: asking various executives which player they would choose to build a team around. Most execs chose Mike Trout or Clayton Kershaw, which makes sense. Some chose Andrew McCutchen, which, sure, why not? Others went with young prospects or decided that it was most important to build around certain positions like shortstop or catcher…

But there is one exec — a general manager no less! — who made a choice and a justification therefor which is impossible to get one’s head around:

No Pitcher Has Thrown As Many Pitches Over as Few Innings as Zack Wheeler This Millenium

I found only 8 pitcher-seasons where a pitcher in his 20’s has thrown more than 3,200 pitches in less than 190 innings ... No pitcher has gotten less from more pitches than Zack Wheeler in the last decade. No pitcher, not one, has been pushed to throw as many pitches over as few innings as Zack Wheeler over the last decade (expanding the sample to 2005 includes Gil Meche, who retired early, Scott Kazmir, who fell apart and lost velocity, and Brad Penny). Here’s the decade-long list:

Don’t underestimate Ryan Howard’s value. | SportsonEarth.com : Anthony Castrovince Article

Howard is not, will not be and arguably never was the guy worthy of a $125 million extension in 2010, and the Phillies acknowledged as much in trade talks this winter, telling (uninterested) teams they’re willing to swallow a significant sum of the $60 million still owed to Howard over the next two years. Word is, the team would be willing to take on somewhere in the neighborhood of $50 million.

AZ Alkmaar has hired Oakland Athletics executive Billy Beane, one of the most celebrated advanced statistics gurus in the world and the subject of the film “Moneyball”, in an advisory capacity.

The AZ site says he’ll be helping the club in the areas of “high performance and innovation”.

The club’s general director, Robert Eenhoorn, played four ...

Commissioner Rob Manfred wants international draft

New Commissioner Rob Manfred, who visited Indians players Tuesday morning, said the situation has convinced him for the need of a worldwide draft. Manfred talked about that and several other subjects Tuesday.

Manfred believes MLB leveled the playing field regarding the amateur draft in the last negotiations with the players association when a slotting system was introduced for the first 10 rounds of the draft.

“It re-established the principal purpose of the draft, in that the weakest team had ...

Neyer: Three reasons to watch the Yankees in 2015

I do hope you’€™ll give me just a few minutes to convince you that as much as you might hate them, the Yankees will be tremendously interesting in 2015, and well worth the occasional check-in. Why?

Neyer - On DIBS and the Future of Batting Statistics

We’€™ve all been cognizant of DIPS for ... gosh, it’s been nearly 15 years now. But for whatever reasons, we don’€™t usually pay nearly as much attention to DIBS. Maybe because there’s not a single baseline for DIBS, as there is for DIPS.

What Jedlovec has done, though, is drill about as deeply into hitters’ performances as possible, and come up with something that’s more useful, more predictive, than even the more sophisticated numbers we usually reference.

Lindbergh: Baseball’s Secret Scandal: The Player Who Hits Popups on Purpose

Molitor to Nuñez: “Every time I see you hit one in the air, you owe me 20 push-ups.”

How did Nunez go from being Derek Jeter’s heir apparent to fighting for a part-time role on a likely last-place team, while still in his physical prime? On the surface, Nunez’s story might sound like those of countless other disappointing players. Nunez, however, has picked up a habit that no one else has. He’s hooked on homers-in-silos, addicted to easy outs, going through life with a bad batted ball on ...
