New York Mets’ Yoenis Cespedes on outfield drop: ‘I’m human’ - Mets Blog- ESPN

OK, then.

“The ball just fell out of my glove,” Cespedes, who also struck out to end the game with the tying run at third base, said through an interpreter. “...The ball just fell. I’m human.”

Dodgers’ Joc Pederson aims to make baseball a contact sport again after second-half struggles last year - LA Times

He looked out of sync in the most of the games I watched him this spring.

In the winter, Pederson sought to shave the extraneous movement from his swing. In the spring, he huddled with new hitting coach Turner Ward to sharpen his daily routine. This coming summer will determine whether he can learn how to counter the pitchers who solved him last season.

“I made some adjustments, and I like where I’m at,” Pederson said.

A survey of rival talent evaluators who saw Pederson this spring raised ...

Kansas City Royals say New York Mets’ presence soured pregame pomp

In a day of firsts, it was the New York Mets who had the dubious honor of being the first team in MLB history to relive a World Series defeat through a steady stream of big-screen highlights before the victor raised the championship banner on Opening Day—in their face.

“It was just strange, the pregame ceremony,” Yost said.

Source: Gregory Polanco, Pirates agree to five-year extension - Yahoo Sports

Gregory Polanco and the Pittsburgh Pirates agreed on a five-year contract extension with two club options that locks in the prime years of the young outfielder, something with which the Pirates have found significant success in recent years, a source with knowledge of the club’s dealings told Yahoo Sports.

The deal is believed to guarantee Polanco in the mid-$30 million range, the source said, and should be announced this week. Polanco rejected Pittsburgh’s seven-year, $25 million offer ...

Baseball on the Radio 2016

Both Chicago teams change flagship radio stations for 2016 while the Phillies drop WPHT-AM from their gamecasts.

Baseball on the radio has an appeal that can’t be matched by television and lets you follow the game while pretending to get other things done.

Cardinals put their faith in the future | St. Louis Cardinals | stltoday.com

I finished The Cardinal Way. I enjoyed the book and recommend it, especially to Cardinals fans and those interested in the workings of major league front offices. My only quibble with the book is its failure to fully unify the stories/chapters in the book. Don’t get me wrong; each chapter was interesting and worth reading. It’s just that, although you can see how Howard tried to tie everything together, he fell a little short in executing it.

Has anyone else finished the book? If so, what are ...

Let’s Find Some MLB Comps for Tyler White | FanGraphs Baseball

Looking over his comps I agree that he’ll need to exceed expectations and add more power to stick around at first. It will be fascinating to follow his progress.

For White to have a successful career as an average-or-better everyday first baseman, it feels like he’s going to have to add some power, like Carpenter did last year. White stands at just 5-foot-11, which may not bode well for a future power spike, but at the very least, he’s cognizant of the fact that a bit more power could go a ...

OCR: Managers Mike Scioscia, Dave Roberts deal with new realities of their role

Few managers today retain the stature and independence Scioscia has with the Angels. While far from the baseball Luddite he was cast as during last year’s power struggle with former general manager Jerry Dipoto, Scioscia is nonetheless more old school than new math.

None of that can be said of Roberts. With the Dodgers, he serves at the whim of perhaps baseball’s most empowered, and crowded, front office. Analytical input will be a part of his life every day of the season.

“Yeah, ...

Taylor Teagarden – shown in Al-Jazeera documentary – suspended for violating drug policy

Taylor Teagarden, a free agent catcher who was named in the same Al-Jazeera report that connected Peyton Manning and baseball stars Ryan Zimmerman and Ryan Howard to anti-aging clinics, was suspended 80 games by Major League Baseball on Friday.

MLB’s statement did not cite a failed drug test in disciplining Teagarden, 32, who appeared in just 17 major league games the past two seasons, most recently with the Chicago Cubs in 2015. Instead, it noted that Teagarden will be suspended upon his ...

Baseball statistics: Spring forward | The Economist

I’ve never been one to accept the broad sabermetric pronouncements. In this case, I’ve always kept my eye on spring training and when I notice someone with a great stat line, I wonder, “Why?” Is there something different? Did the pitcher learn a new pitch? Has a batter made some kind of discernible adjustment? If I can find something I’ll take a flyer on the player. If I can’t, I ignore it. Not every guy I’ve picked up has panned out, but enough of them did to make the effort worthwhile.

Yet in ...

LOOK: Mike Trout and a tale of love and deceit lead to a great prank

As you’re about to see, Angels warhorse Jered Weaver and outfielder/sun god Mike Trout leveraged the occasion of April Fool’s Day to hurtle staff ace Garrett Richards into a seeming broth of romantic tensions. Dale Murphy on Brycer Harper & Bautista

Dale Murphy was talking with his wife Nancy about this supposed rift between generations. You probably have heard something about it. Bryce Harper wants the game to be more fun, livelier, with more feeling expressed, with bat flips and fist pumps and raw emotion. A few other younger players have said similar things either with words or, in the case of Jose Bautista, with an epic bat flip for the ages.
And in the last couple of weeks, a couple of great players from my childhood — Goose Gossage ...

Are Rays sacrificing defense for offense? | Tampa Bay Times

The proper valuation of players is key for turns like this one.

The key to any success the Rays have had, specifically in their run of making the playoffs four times in six years, has been based on dominant pitching and dazzling defense.

But the net result of adding those bats was trading two key pitchers, high-end reliever Jake McGee and Nathan Karns from their starting depth, then this week ditching two slick fielders, catcher Rene Rivera and first baseman James Loney.

Baseball operations ...

Jonathan Schoop proving power is for real | MLB.com

You can probably still buy low.

All of this is important because a roster that also contains slugging stars like Jones, Chris Davis and Manny Machado makes it easy for Schoop to be overlooked, but there’s an argument to be made that if healthy, he’ll be baseball’s best power-hitting second baseman in 2016. After all, his 484.5 foot homer off of Johnny Cueto on Aug. 26 was the third-longest home run measured by Statcast™ all season long, and one of the two ahead required help from Coors Field.
