Red Sox designate Edward Mujica for assignment

he Red Sox have designated reliever Edward Mujica for assignment, according to a major league source.

The 31-year-old is 1-1 with a 4.61 ERA in 11 games and 13 2/3 innings this year with eight strikeouts and three walks. Opponents are hitting .294 with a .345 OBP and .490 slugging mark (along with three homers) against him.

While the corresponding roster move isn’t clear, the fact that the Red Sox had righthander Matt Barnes appear out of the bullpen for Triple A Pawtucket on Wednesday in ...

MLB commissioner remains open to 154-game schedule

Baseball is great! Let’s have less of it!

“Players have asked about 154,” Manfred said, via MLB.com. “I think 154 is a topic that is complicated. It has big competitive and economic ramifications. Having said that, I think in the 20-something years I’ve worked in the game, there’s more conversation about it than there has been in a long time.”

It has been more than 50 years since baseball switched to a 162-game schedule, and one of the points of debate back in the 1960s likely would resurface ...

Terry Collins hasn’t decided what to do when Travis d’Arnaud returns - Newsday

This is a nice problem to have. I haven’t looked yet but some team must need a catcher and has an extra shortstop. Off the top of my head, how about Reynolds and either d’Arnaud or Plawecki plus Matz or Syndergaard for Tulo?

The story of the woman hired by the Phillies as the first female baseball scout

They could probably use some more today.

During their meeting, Edith Houghton thrust into Carpenter’s hands a scrapbook of her life in baseball, taking into account the Bobbies, the A. A.‘s, and the doomed trip overseas led by a delusional former catcher. Carpenter saw the work experience as enough to help guide his team into the future and brought her on board as one of his scouts, the first ever woman to fill the role (Bessie Largent of the White Sox had been doing so but worked as a partner ...

Dodgers’ Puig set to start rehab assignment, but Ryu’s recovery slows - The Orange County Register

This doesn’t sound good.

Ryu was supposed to begin throwing to hitters this week but did not make the trip with the Dodgers. Instead, he stayed behind to work out at Dodger Stadium and the training staff “decided to give him a couple days off” after his velocity decreased during his most recent bullpen session.

Mattingly said Ryu was clocked at only 82-83 mph during his throwing session Friday at Dodger Stadium, “a couple ticks below” what he had thrown in his previous workout. The lost ...

For Boston, the big left-handed pitcher, Babe Ruth, was all that a pitcher is supposed to be, and some more. He put his team into the running in the third inning by smashing a mighty rap into the upper tier of the right-field grandstand. Ruth also had two other hits to his credit. His pitching throughout was of high ...

Votto Ejected, May Face Further Discipline.

Reds first baseman Joey Votto was ejected from Wednesday’s game vs. the Pirates and could be facing further discipline after bumping home-plate umpire Chris Conroy.

During a scoreless game, Votto struck out to end the top of the third inning and was visibly upset, yelling and spiking his helmet as he walked away. Votto also appeared to say something toward starting pitcher Gerrit Cole in the Pirates’ third-base dugout before Conroy ejected him while Votto’s back was turned.

I always thought ...

Pedro Martinez: Manny Ramirez spiked Red Sox drinks with Viagra

Not quite Merkle’s boner….

Newly-elected Hall of Famer Pedro Martinez had a book come out this week (the succinctly named “Pedro”) and he’s been making the rounds through the media. There were recently a few possibly-controversial things that came out, but here’s a rather funny one involving one Manny Ramirez.

In the clip below, Martinez describes the Red Sox’s 2004 mixed drink that he made for Ramirez with gin, honey and wine—only to find out that Manny Being Manny threw in some Viagra. They ...

Baseball Prospectus | BP Ballpark Night

So there is still a chance…

Of course, the 2015 version of Ryan Braun does appear to be different than the pre-injury Braun. Some may ascribe his struggles to a lack of performance-enhancing drugs, but the batted-ball velocity suggests the power in his swing hasn’t subsided in any meaningful manner. Instead, the 2015 Braun is different because he’s exploitable. He’s pitchable. Opposing hurlers can challenge him early with hard stuff in on the hands and then work out of the strike zone with ...

Cubs young core envisioning playoff run

“They’ve (the Cardinals) created this culture, this method,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon said. “Then, you layer that with this fan base, baseball fans who support this team and know the game. So bully for them.

“We’re in the process of doing the same thing with the Cubs.”

Who knows when it will happen? But Chicago is convinced there will come a time when the Cardinals no longer bully the Cubs, and it might be now.

“It feels like this is just the beginning,” Epstein said. “Even though we haven’t ...

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 5-6-2015

New York Evening World, May 6, 1915:

The Red Sox are here for the first time to-day and the shooting ought to be good. They have just shut out the Senators two games in succession, but are far behind their schedule of cinching the pennant before the Fourth of July. As yet they have not beaten our new Yanks.

This was the closest thing I could find to a preview of the May 6, 1915 Boston-New York game, a 13-inning affair with a pitching matchup that saw Yankee right hander Jack Warhop face off with ...

Angels’ debuting rookie records walk-off rarity | angels.com

This is how to make a good first impression.

“It’s hard to find catching,” Angels assistant general manager Scott Servais said prior to the game. “We needed it in our system, and Carlos had spent well over 100 games at Triple-A already and held his own. He had a really good winter ball, our reports were good on him, so, why not?”

Perez always had a plus arm—he’s thrown out 36 percent of would-be basestealers in his Minor League career—and the Angels saw him make big strides in other aspects of ...

Right-hander Stephen Strasburg of Washington Nationals leaves start after three innings

Best laid plans…

“He’s got a little issue under his shoulder blade. Had it last start,” Nationals manager Matt Williams said after the game. “Could be an alignment issue, but as he finishes pitches, it grabs him every once in a while. Tonight it got a little bit worse. So we’ll have to have the chiropractor look at him.”

Confirmed news on Rays’ Alex Cobb: Partial tear in elbow, will try to pitch through it | Tampa Bay Times

Cobb received PRP therapy, in where platelet rich plasma is injected to speed healing, during a visit to see noted specialist Dr. James Andrews.

Rays president of baseball operations Matt Silverman said the team was still in “a wait-and-see mode’’ and it was “premature” to speculate about surgery. “He has had some tests performed and we’re awaiting results,’’ Silverman said.

Reds notes: Injury has Mesoraco in Catch-22 situation

Is this really a difficult choice?

Devin Mesoraco is facing a bit of a Catch-22: If he has surgery to repair the impingement in his left hip, he’ll miss pretty much the rest of this season.

If he continues to try to rehab the injury without surgery, he might be reduced to pinch-hitting and 10 games as designated hitter when the Reds play interleague road games.

Growing up Ted

Great article, well worth the time to read.

THIS STORY BEGAN two years ago, when I reached out to Claudia about meeting at her home in Hernando. The timing never worked for her because she struggles to look past her obsessions: nursing school and a book she wrote about her father, which started as a stocking stuffer about lessons she learned and turned into a cathartic exploration of the person she’s still trying to be. Finally she said yes. The first visit lasted a week in the fall of 2014, and ...
