Yankees farm system could be MLB’s best | MLB.com

The Yankees moves have been pretty, pretty good.

After shipping Aroldis Chapman to the Cubs for Adam Warren and three prospects, including shortstop Gleyber Torres (No. 26 on MLBPipeline.com’s Top 100 Prospects list), and then spinning Andrew Miller to the Indians for a four-prospect package headed by outfielder Clint Frazier (No. 24) and left-hander Justus Sheffield (No. 95), the Yankees have arguably the best and deepest farm system in the game. (We’ll update our system rankings after the ...

Trade Deadline storylines across Major Leagues | MLB.com

Brewers catcher Jonathan Lucroy rejected a trade that would have sent him to Cleveland, and now Milwaukee has resumed dialogue on Lucroy with Texas. If a deal is completed, MLB.com’s T.R. Sullivan has reported that slugger Joey Gallo—the Rangers’ top prospect according to MLB Pipeline—would likely be involved. Other names to watch in such a trade are Double-A pitchers Luis Ortiz (the Rangers’ No. 3 prospect) and Yohander Mendez (No. 4).

Worst Trade Deadline Deals Ever Made

When a contender takes the plunge on a deal before the Trade Deadline, it hopes for the best, believing these additions can help put the team over the top. But there is almost always risk involved, and sometimes a move comes back to bite.

As this year’s non-waiver Deadline approaches, here are the 10 deals that have backfired the worst on a contending club, since the Deadline moved to July 31 in 1986 (this year it falls on Aug. 1).

The Morning Call: L.V. IronPigs: Chris Truby continues down unconventional path

Catching up with an unconventional Primer legend who is now the Phillies’ roving minor league infield coordinator.

Whether he’s working with prospects in Reading, Lehigh Valley or Clearwater, or back home in Indiana at a baseball facility, all Truby wants to do is be around the game.

“I love the game,” Truby said. “I knew whenever I was done playing, I wanted to stay in it somehow. Jobs are not easy to come by. I was lucky enough to have a couple of connections.

“I love what I do now. I like ...

SBN: Michael Young was so surprised by Elvis Andrus in a Jigsaw mask that he almost punched him

Too funny.

And for the first time ever, Beltre was in on an Elvis gag, not its victim.

Michael Young, the longtime Texas Ranger, was inducted into the Texas Rangers Baseball Hall of Fame on Saturday night. It’s common for the Rangers to parade special guests into the stadium for occasions like this, but Michael Young’s entrance was anything but ordinary.

Work visa approved, Astros’ Yulieski Gurriel plays for GCL affiliate - Houston Chronicle

With his work visa approved, Yulieski Gurriel made his organizational and stateside professional debut Saturday afternoon with the Astros’ Gulf Coast League affiliate in Kissimmee, Fla.

Gurriel went 0 for 3 with two strikeouts, two weeks to the day from when the Cuban infielder was introduced in a press conference at Minute Maid Park. The Astros’ $47.5-million man is scheduled to be off Sunday and play again for the GCL club on Monday in the early stages of his tune up for a likely mid-August ...

Athletics Go For New Approach With Eibner-for-Burns Deal - TKB

In a surprise early-deadline move, the Oakland A’s and the Kansas City Royals swapped a pair of outfielders on Saturday. The Athletics sent 26-year-old Billy Burns to the Royals for 27-year-old Brett Eibner.
...
Eibner was perfect in both right and left field while with the Royals, which holds some appeal and a positive 0.5 WAR where Burns’ WAR was non-existent. After examining the stats and comparing the two players as much as possible, the real appeal for the Athletics’ in Eibner was ...

Managers’ insane strategy for winning games: Forget the win | New York Post

This is one of the dumbest sentences ever.

The reason: Winning baseball is being de-emphasized! Winning pitching is being lost to ridiculous bullpen strategies that remove effective starters after six or seven innings for no better reason than to further feed a formula founded on rabbit’s-foot fantasy.

Royals closer Wade Davis returns to Kansas City for MRI | The Kansas City Star

This doesn’t sound good.

Royals closer Wade Davis left the team and took a flight back to Kansas City on Saturday night to undergo an MRI on his sore right arm, a source with knowledge of the situation confirmed to The Star.

The news sent shockwaves through baseball just two days before the non-waiver trade deadline, ending the speculation that Davis might be flipped for prospects before Monday. For the Royals, a franchise snake-bit by injuries in 2016, the alarm bells sounded once more.

Nationals trade for Mark Melancon from Pirates | MLB.com

The trade deadline deals are finally happening.

The Nationals made acquiring bullpen help their top priority prior to Monday’s non-waiver Trade Deadline. They addressed that need Saturday afternoon, completing a trade for right-hander Mark Melancon from the Pirates in exchange for left-handers Felipe Rivero and Taylor Hearn.

Padres trade Matt Kemp to Braves for Olivera | MLB.com

Reportedly, Hector Olivera will be designated for assignment by the Padres when he comes off the restricted list next week.

The Braves officially acquired Kemp and at least $10.5 million from the Padres on Saturday night in exchange for Olivera. Atlanta’s executives viewed this as a move that could enrich the club’s future and also create some excitement as the team attempts to turn things around during the season’s final two months.

Umpire rushing Matt Wieters into box draws Orioles catcher’s ire in loss to Blue Jays - Baltimore Sun

The pace of play rules are a joke.

“I feel like you have [to take] time and an umpire is more worried about pace of game and the players are more worried about trying to win a game. I’m trying to try to calm down and I needed to step out of the box because I thought the ball was low and he’s trying to rush me back in the box and I just didn’t appreciate that.”

Teams Rarely Receive Equal Value When Trading An Ace - BaseballAmerica.com

Those factors pretty much make this analysis useless.

Obviously, factors such as contract length, pending free agency status, team record and payroll availability all play a role in such trades. But from a pure, on-the-field baseball standpoint, it’s clear getting an equal return back for an ace in a deadline deal is a tricky proposition based on our findings.

We’re seemingly in every game that Rick starts for us,” manager John Farrell said. “It’s reflective in his record. It’s reflective in the record we have as a team when he’s on the mound. He’s been outstanding this year. He’s been our stopper.”

In other words, Porcello has been everything Cherington imagined when he traded for the right-hander and signed him to a four-year, $82.5 million contract extension before he threw a single pitch for the Red Sox ...

Miami Marlins’ Ichiro Suzuki on hitting 3,000, the ‘real’ Hit King and Lou Piniella

Was there anything that bothered you about coverage when you passed Pete Rose?
I was actually happy to see the Hit King get defensive. I kind of felt I was accepted. I heard that about five years ago Pete Rose did an interview, and he said that he wished that I could break that record. Obviously, this time around it was a different vibe. In the 16 years that I have been here, what I’ve noticed is that in America, when people feel like a person is below them, not just in numbers but in general, ...

MLB Games Are Slow Again, And It’s Helping Older Hitters | FiveThirtyEight

I love baseball but the games are too long.

Just before the 2015 season, new MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred added new rules designed to speed up the game. And they worked: after the average game took an all-time high of 3 hours and 2 minutes the previous year, it fell by 6 minutes in 2015. Manfred’s tweaks had the desired effect, and his attention moved to other problems in the game, like the lack of offense.

But unlike offense, which continues to spike, Manfred’s pace-of-play fixes didn’t ...

Source: Phillies, Rangers in ‘pretty deep’ trade talks about Vince Velasquez | CSN Philly

I can’t imagine how much the Phillies would want for him right now. The only plausible scenario is the Phillies don’t think he’ll physically hold up.

It would take top talent to get Velasquez, a 24-year-old right-hander with a power arm. The Phillies acquired him over the winter from Houston as the centerpiece in the deal that sent Ken Giles to the Astros.

The Rangers had several scouts at the game, including Scott Littlefield, one of their top talent evaluators.

Trade Deadline: Latest news and rumors | MLB.com

Really?

The Braves have no intention to trade Francoeur unless they are presented with an offer they can’t refuse. Ditto for Inciarte. Olivera has limited trade value because of his domestic violence suspension, which expires Tuesday, but Atlanta could try to package him in a deal with an attractive trade piece.

Washington Post: Nationals Execute Historic Triple Play

The Nationals were in a jam, so Dusty Baker inserted his Triple Play Defense:

The San Francisco Giants had loaded the bases with no outs against two Nationals relievers — Oliver Perez and Blake Treinen — and Baker was back out seeking a remedy. First, he replaced the right-handed Treinen with the left-handed Sammy Solis to face left-handed hitting Brandon Crawford. His next move was to double switch Ryan Zimmerman into the game by replacing Clint Robinson at first base and batting Zimmerman ...

New Movie About Baseball’s Most Colorful Players | Bauer and Bo Show | Fox Sports 910 Phoenix

I attended my first ballgame at Fenway on my eighth birthday. Since my father hadn’t been to the park since he was a little kid, we left for the park extremely early. With a lot of time to kill we sat outside the park where we met two teenage girls who regularly hung out to get autographs. We were very lucky. As each person walked by the girls would tell us if the guy was a player. One of the first players to walk by (and yes players would just walk up to the park in those days) was Bill Lee ...
