The centerfield camera sits at the center of this operation, and only its ubiquity keeps us from recognizing it as the miracle it is. With this shot, pioneered by NBC producer Harry Coyle in the middle of last century, anyone at home—or at the bar, or in line for takeout—can see the flight of a pitch better than all but a handful of people in the actual stadium. It makes what had been in the pre- and early-television days the work of conjecture or imagination—the particular break of a ...
A truly disgusting suggestion.
Over at SI Richard Dietsch has a piece in which he asked several broadcasters and media members about changes they’d make to sports broadcasts and reporting. Fox’s lead play-by-play guy said this:
Specifically to baseball, I would make players more accessible. There is no way networks can be able to talk to NASCAR drivers before they stuff themselves into the driver’s seat of a race car to go over 200 miles per hour while we are all forbidden to talk to ...
No surprise if you look at his home run totals.
Atlanta Braves lefthander Andrew McKirahan has been suspended 80 games for violating league’s performance-enhancing drug policy, FOX Sports Insider Ken Rosenthal reported Monday….
McKirahan was a Rule 5 pick acquired from the Chicago Cubs by the Miami Marlins. The Braves acquired him after the Marlins waived him in March.
The best players by position that Poz considers to have no HoF support.
You will notice that all my Museum of the Nice Player inductees are from the last 40 years or so. I think this is because before 1960, many of the Nice Player candidates have been elected to the real Hall of Fame. Bill Mazeroski would have been a good choice, but he’s in Cooperstown (and, to be fair, he probably had too much Hall of Fame support from fans anyway).

hall of very good
The injuries are starting to pile up for the Mets.
Toledo News-Bee, April 20, 1915:
Groping around in the dark at his home in Chicago, Jimmy Lavender, Cub pitcher, stumbled and fell against a bathtub on Sunday night. Two ribs were broken. He may be out of the game for a month. Lavender says he was ill.
Mmm-hmm. “Ill”. A likely story.
Good things come…
Orioles manager Buck Showalter couldn’t believe that the two half innings by Buchholz took nearly 40 minutes of the three hours, 24 minutes it took to complete the game. More annoying to Showalter was the impact it had on his starter Chris Tillman.
“I wouldn’t say it’s mentally tough,” added Tillman. “It’s more physically challenging. I’ve been in that situation enough to prepare myself in the dugout to go back out to make pitches from the get-go. First ...

Why one moonshot can matter more than years of past performance: applying Bill James’s concept of “signature significance” to home run distance.
The group of 22 players who have hit at least one 477-foot homer over the past eight seasons…features Mike Trout…Giancarlo Stanton…Adam Dunn, Prince Fielder, Josh Hamilton, David Ortiz, Nelson Cruz, Justin Upton, Edwin Encarnación and Mark Teixeira…
For each foot beyond the distance of a league-average longball (usually just under 400 feet) that ...
He was also working on his defense.
The White Sox will promote left-hander Carlos Rodon, the third overall selection in last year’s draft, tweets Ken Rosenthal of FOXSports.com. Rodon will join the team tomorrow and will initially pitch out of the bullpen, according to Rosenthal.
Brett Lawrie, the voice of reason?
Lawrie said first-base umpire Greg Gibson commended him on how he handled himself, and Lawrie said, with a little grin, “He hits you with one, and there’s two things I can do. I can blow up right here, or I can just take it and walk to first base and let him get in trouble and let it get the better of him.
“What’s the crowd want me to do right there? They want me to blow up and create a huge scene, but why fuel the fire? Why dump another thing of ...
It’s on my reading list but I haven’t gotten around to it yet. Has anyone read the book? If you have, I’m interested in your thoughts on Sherman’s take.
Beleaguered? First, the season is just about two weeks old. Second, the team isn’t very good. It has a lot of old high-priced players. The team needs to take a step back for a season or two.
Maybe 11 days on the road, far away from the media glare of New York and the growing “De-rek Je-ter!” fan derision at Yankee Stadium, will cure Didi Gregorius of the yips and help cleanse his brain before he returns home to a three-game series against ... gulp ... the Mets! And at least perhaps Brian ...

Put your HD channels on parent block…
[Pete] Rose will serve FOX as a guest analyst for the MLB on FOX pregame show on FOX and FOX Sports 1 and will also appear on “MLB Whiparound,” “America’s Pregame” and “FOX Sports Live” on FOX Sports 1…
FOX officials say they are hiring Rose for his on-air presence and that he will make for compelling television regardless of how one views his controversial past.
The network’s move comes at a time when Rose, baseball’s all-time hits leader with 4,256, has ...
[A.J.] Ellis has ranked among the worst framers (catchers who get fewer strike calls than they should as measured by, again, Pitch f/x) in the majors the past few seasons. That put him in an uncomfortable situation this past winter with the Dodgers’ front office now in the hands of a coterie of highly sophisticated, analytically inclined decision-makers who believe strongly in the value of the pitch-framing metrics.
“I’ll be honest – I was motivated by the realization that that ...
Do dead centaurs bounce?
In other all-time HR list news, Trout passes Drew.
Although I play Dynasty League Baseball now, I still think the same way when I watch a good (or bad) defensive play.

Will Colon move to the AL to DH when his pitching days are over? He’s clearly a winner at the plate.
Bartolo Colon’s teams are 11-1 whenever he collects a hit. They’re an unblemished 6-0 when he drives in a run. Nobody’s perfect. But Colon’s teams are close to perfect whenever he puts on a batting clinic, even if that clinic has been closed most of the time.

Everyone was in a tizzy!!!
There was no hypothetical man in the bleachers with binoculars causing controversy in the White Sox game against the Tigers on Friday at Comerica Park.
It was a hypothetical challenge that had everyone in a tizzy after a 2-1 Sox loss to the Tigers.

He has 2,849 hits in the majors and is closing in on 3,000. He probably needs another season to do it, but Suzuki is exceptionally fit, and motivated. Asked how badly he wants to reach 3,000, he responded this way:
“That question is really similar to ‘Do you want to get a hit this at-bat?’ or ‘Do you want to go to the World Series?’ ” said Suzuki, who is 5 for 21 this season. “You want to get a hit every time you get up there, and everybody would love to go to the World Series. ...
