Free Agent Compensation Must Die – The Hardball Times

Ahh, because teams are part of the process. Free agency is collectively bargained and is not some inherent right for players.

My question is this: Why should teams that lose players to free agency receive any sort of compensation whatsoever?

Edit: Link fixed. Sorry, Jim.

MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred unhappy with increased length of games

Three hours is too long. I love baseball. I’d love it even more if the games were 20-30 minutes shorter.

Through Monday, the average time of a nine-inning game this season was 3 hours, 26 seconds. At the same stage of last season, about six weeks after MLB implemented much-ballyhooed new pace-of-game rules, the average game time was 2:53:33. That pace did slow, however, and the average time by season’s end wound up at 2:56:14.

Feldman (NYDN): Binghamton Mets Double-A team to stay in town, change name

I’m going with Heroin Hubs.

“We’re thrilled to be keeping Double-A, New York Mets baseball here in the community but with a new name that everyone in Binghamton can call its own. The new name will bring in a new era that proudly represents a crown jewel of the community.”

The Binghamton Mets were bought after the 2015 season by Florida-based Main Street Baseball, but the sale was rejected by the Eastern League after the buyers announced that they wanted to move the team to Wilmington, ...

Report: Rangers’ Rougned Odor suspended 8 games by MLB for punching Toronto’s Jose Bautista

OAKLAND, Calif.—Major League Baseball gave Texas Rangers second baseman Rougned Odor an eight-game suspension on Tuesday for his role in a weekend brawl with the Toronto Blue Jays, according to MLB Network’s Jon Heyman.

Heyman, citing an unnamed source, said Odor plans to appeal the suspension.

Without naming sources, Yahoo’s Jeff Passan reported that Odor will also face a $5,000 fine.

Cervelli extension locks up another Pirate long-term

The Pirates signed catcher Francisco Cervelli to a three-year contract extension that will keep him in Pittsburgh through the 2019 season, the team announced today.

The Pirates have Cervelli, Gerrit Cole, Gregory Polanco, Josh Harrison, Jung Ho Kang and Starling Marte all under contract through 2019.

Cervelli, 30, was going to reach free agency after this season.

The Pirates acquired Cervelli from the New York Yankees before the 2015 season. He hit .295 with a .370 on-base percentage, set ...

Braves fire Gonzalez as manager

Jeff Francoeur knows a good airline to get him out of town.

The Braves fired manager Fredi Gonzalez on Tuesday, after one of the worst half-seasons in the franchise’s 140-year history was followed by its worst-ever start to a season. They have a majors-worst 7-28 record.

An announcement of the firing and his replacement was expected from the team later Tuesday.

Although it’s widely known that the Braves are in the midst of a rebuilding effort that gutted the major league team while ...

Garrett Richards of Los Angeles Angels opts to get stem-cell injection in elbow, avoid TJ surgery

I guess it doesn’t hurt. I’m not so sure how effective the treatment will be.

- Angels pitcher Garrett Richards had a stem-cell injection in his right elbow Monday.

Manager Mike Scioscia says there’s no timetable for his return. The right-hander went on the 15-day disabled list May 6, leaving the injury-riddled team without its best starting pitcher.

Richards decided on the injection as a way to avoid surgery for the torn ligament in his arm, although it will be weeks before he knows whether ...

But the Mets got good news on Monday when the left-handed Matz visited a doctor and was found to have no ligament damage in his throwing elbow, according to a person who was briefed on the matter. The person requested anonymity because the Mets made no formal announcement.

Tigers’ Brad Ausmus ejected, leaves sweatshirt over home plate

Well, you can definitely say Brad Ausmus isn’t going down without a fight. Ausmus was ejected after arguing balls and strikes with home plate umpire Doug Eddings during Monday’s game between the Detroit Tigers and Minnesota Twins. He may or may not need that sweatshirt later this season, though.

Tim Lincecum agrees to deal with Angels

Tim Lincecum, who recently auditioned for teams to show he is healthy, has agreed to a deal with the Los Angeles Angels, according to ESPN’s Jim Bowden.

The deal is pending a physical.

Lincecum spent nine seasons with the San Francisco Giants, but he has not pitched in the majors since last June. Yahoo! Sports reported that the Chicago White Sox and Giants were two of the last teams to not make the cut.

Minor League Fantasy Baseball Is Real And Kinda Cool, Maybe?

Fantasy players assemble weekly rosters from 100 of the game’s top prospects, with points distributed for certain on-field events (four points for hitting a home run, one point for striking a batter out, etc.) A minor league game, however, presents challenges that don’t exist in other fantasy sports.

“I had one guy this week that just got called up to San Diego, so that kind of defeats the purpose if they get too hot,” Kevin Kievit, a 38-year-old AFLAC insurance salesman in Rhode ...

PIRATES’ GERRIT COLE: CUBS AREN’T THE BEST TEAM IN BASEBALL

When a reporter posed the question that Cole just shut down the best team in baseball, the Pirates pitcher politely corrected the statement:

“It’s just an opportunity to salvage the series,” Cole said. “I don’t really think they’re the best team in baseball.”

Of course, the Cubs are currently the best team in baseball - the only team still in the single digits in the loss column halfway through May.

The Cubs sit at 27-9 overall with a +109 run differential. In fact, their run differential ...

The [Chicago] Day Book, May 16, 1916:

They’re finicky fellows, those Washington ballplayers. Whenever they visit the Polo grounds in New York they lug along their own dirt from the capital city for hand-drying purposes. They claim the soil in and around home plate in Gotham is “trick dirt,” asserting that instead of drying the moisture on their hands it makes them slippery and the balls and bats harder to handle.

OTP 2016 May 16: College baseball takes hit from Mississippi politics

The state flag is already keeping Mississippi from hosting predetermined NCAA preseason and postseason tournaments, which is why the state didn’t put in a bid to host the SEC baseball tournament, which could have been held at Trustmark Park, in Pearl.

An anti-flag group held a rally last month at the SEC headquarters in Birmingham to ask the league to ban Mississippi from postseason play altogether. Postseason baseball tournaments are currently determined by how well a team performs during ...

Pirates notebook: Challenge protocol could be more efficient, Hurdle says | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It’s not. Manager didn’t go out to argue every little thing. A great many challenges are fishing expeditions.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon doesn’t mind the wait, saying the system is “as good as it can be” at this point. He decided waiting 20 or 30 seconds to debate a challenge is better than the two or three minutes it might take for him to go out and argue a call.

red sox - Hanley is being Hanley, and it seems to be working out for all involved - WEEI | Rob Bradford

It worked for Mr. 3000.

Hanley Ramirez bunted with two outs, the scored tied in the ninth inning and David Ortiz standing at third base Saturday afternoon.

“He saw something maybe only he saw,” lamented Red Sox manager John Farrell.

Not a good baseball play, as the reaction from virtually everyone in Fenway Park could attest after the execution resulted in an easy, inning-ending out.

Feud reignites in Blue Jays-Rangers finale

That changed two batters later, when Justin Smoak hit a grounder to third baseman Adrian Beltre, who tried to get a forceout at second base. Bautista came into the base with a hard slide that was ruled a violation of MLB’s new slide rule and made contact with second baseman Rougned Odor’s leg. And even though Odor’s throw sailed wide of first, the Rangers were awarded an inning-ending double play because of Bautista’s illegal slide.

Before the play was over, Odor shoved Bautista with both ...

Townsend (BLS): Houston paper apologizes for quoting Carlos Gomez’s broken English

He Hate Me was unavailable for comment.

What’s not arguable, though, is that Smith should have used better judgment in quoting Gomez within his article. Gomez, who comes from Santiago in the Dominican Republic, does not speak English as his primary language. He speaks well enough English though that his words are understandable and translatable, yet Smith elected to quote Gomez’s broken English word-for-word.

Former Angels and Dodgers pitcher Dan Haren opens up about the inner turmoil that led to his retirement from baseball

Dan Haren repeated a ritual after the miserable outings, and during the last four years of his baseball career the miserable outings became too numerous to count. He trudged off the mound and through the dugout, embarrassed by the reassurances from teammates, so he could find his phone in the clubhouse and text his wife, Jessica.

I quit, Haren would write after games for the Angels or the Dodgers or whoever employed him.

I don’t want to do this anymore.

I’m sick of the stress.
