Sources: Fox Sports Detroit’s Mario Impemba and Rod Allen involved in physical altercation

Sadly, because of Disney’s purchase of FOX, I suspect that we can rule out any airings of When Announcers Attack in primetime in the coming weeks.

When Mickey York and Craig Monroe threw to the booth during Wednesday night’s broadcast of Fox Sports Detroit’s “Tigers Live” pregame show, an unexpected duo appeared on screen — that of Matt Shepard and Kirk Gibson.

Conspicuously absent from the show was the regular tandem of play-by-play announcer Mario Impemba and analyst Rod ...

Rockies’ Trevor Story hit the longest home run in Statcast era on Wednesday

Five hundred and five feet.

That’s how far Colorado Rockies shortstop Trevor Story hit a home run on Wednesday night at Coors Field during a game against the San Francisco Giants.

Should We Adjust How We Evaluate Pitching Prospects? | FanGraphs Baseball

Each season I consolidate prospect ratings and rankings from multiple sources. The last two years, based on research about typical WAR yields, I’ve shifted most pitchers downward and now spend most of my top picks on position players and try to stock up on pitchers later in the drafts. My stockpile of position players is really growing, while I’m still occasionally hitting on pitchers later.

My interest in these three specific pitchers relates to my work on last winter’s top-100 list with ...

Harrisburg Telegraph, September 6, 1918:

“Stuffy” McInnis and “Babe” Ruth Heroes at World Series Opening

With runners on first and second base in the fourth inning of the first of the world series games at Chicago, “Stuffy” McInnis rapped a line single to left field and Dave Shean sped across the plate with the only run of the contest…It was the first time a 1 to 0 score has decided a world’s series game since 1905…

The battle was rated a great triumph for “Babe” Ruth, who outpitched another ...

Tricking an Umpire

(Formerly titled Todd Frazier Tricked an Umpire with a Rubber Ball)

The link at the top goes to an article on Todd Frazier’s play the other day, for which there’s already a thread. This thread is being re-deployed to discuss times when umpires were tricked, intentionally or not, into making the wrong call. BDC’s post #5 below is a great example.

We are a hardcore, dependable, competitive, and funny bunch. If you are dependable, knowledgeable, competitive, and aren’t sensitive to trashtalk, I encourage you to contact me. If you are funny as ...

Joe Maddon’s circle of trust shrinking as Cubs struggle

So, how long before he has twenty pitchers on his roster and only uses three of them?

MILWAUKEE—For contending teams, September often can be about finding out who you can trust in big moments—and who you can’t. Chicago Cubs manager Joe Maddon might be able to use Tuesday’s ugly 11-1 blowout loss to the Milwaukee Brewers for the latter category as his circle of trust might be shrinking right now.

Let’s start on the mound, where he’s still searching for plus and minus relievers—those guy who ...

10 Degrees: MLB’s absurd rules that keep prospects like Vladimir Guerrero Jr. out of the majors

And just last week someone was arguing with me that there’s no game theory in baseball!

What’s most frustrating about Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Eloy Jiménez not gracing stadiums, nightly broadcasts, highlight shows, sizzle reels, memes and every other square inch of baseball-related programming this September is the reason for their absence from the major leagues. It is the purest and most repugnant distillation of capitalism in baseball, and it feels silly to even type something this ...

Mariners show some pregame fight with an altercation in the clubhouse

I have to suspect that Clive Anderson would have done a far better job at keeping the clubhouse in line….

Dee Gordon was very polite in his request.

As the media stood near the doors of the Mariners’ clubhouse in Safeco Field, waiting for a 3:20 p.m. media availability with manager Scott Servais, Gordon approached the group and said quietly, “Could you guys clear out of the clubhouse for just a few minutes, please?”

It wasn’t an unreasonable request. Perhaps a meeting of some sort ...

Meyer has advised players’ unions in basketball, football and hockey, most recently working the past two years under former MLBPA executive director Don Fehr ...

Baseball on pace for lowest batting average since 1972

Let the bickering about what this means begin!

The batting average for the major leagues is on track for its lowest finish in nearly a half-century.

This comes despite slightly more robust offense of late — hits topping strikeouts the past two months.

According to the Elias Sports Bureau, there were 7,134 hits and 6,818 strikeouts in August. That left the season totals at 34,350 hits and 34,103 strikeouts, the first time this season hits led at the end of a full month.

Jacob deGrom posts new MLB mark for consecutive games allowing 3 runs or fewer

Can you imagine what the reactions would be if he were playing on a remotely competent team?

The New York Mets ace went into Monday’s start against the Los Angeles Dodgers with a 1.68 ERA, .978 WHIP, 224 strikeouts and 41 walks allowed in 182 innings pitched.

He left having pitched another gem, allowing two hits, and one earned run with six strikeouts in six innings pitched. And a place in the MLB history books.

The outing means deGrom is the first MLB pitcher to complete 25 straight ...

Fangraphs: Jeff Sullivan: The Particular Skill of Kyle Freeland

Kyle Freeland has been the Rockies’ best pitcher this season, currently with an ERA+ of 160 and a bWAR of 6.8.  That WAR total is the second best season in Rockies’ history. (Ubaldo Jimenez is #1 with 7.5 WAR in 2010.)

Freeland’s ERA (2.90) is far better than his FIP (3.80) and other peripherals-based stats would suggest.  Jeff Sullivan writes about Freeland’s strengths, comparing his location to Mariano Rivera and Tom Glavine:

I’ve mentioned Rivera and Glavine, and I’ve shown you their ...

Phillies reliever Austin Davis has cheat sheet confiscated by Joe West

Veteran umpire Joe West confiscated a card from Phillies reliever Austin Davis in the eighth inning of Philadelphia’s 7-1 loss to the Chicago Cubs on Saturday night.

Davis and Phillies manager Gabe Kapler said he was using the card merely for information on the Cubs hitters. West said that was illegal under Rule 6.02(c)(7), which states that the pitcher shall not have on his person, or in his possession, any foreign substance.

The Raiders and Bears have finalized a deal that will send pass-rusher Khalil Mack and a second-round pick to Chicago in exchange for four draft picks—including two first-rounders—a source told ESPN’s Adam Schefter on Saturday.

The Bears gave up first-round picks in 2019 and 2020, a third-round pick in 2020 and a sixth-round pick in 2019, the source said. In addition to Mack, Chicago also gets a second-round pick in 2020 and a conditional fifth-round pick in ...

Twins hope to ‘make amends’ with Byron Buxton and his agents

At least he’ll only have one option left at the end of the year. With his play this year I can’t see him winning his grievance.

While Buxton, a Platinum Glove Award winner in 2017, will be eligible for salary arbitration for the first time this winter as a so-called “Super 2” player, he will fall 13 days shy of the service time threshold that would give him three full years in the majors. Barring a successful grievance from Buxton’s agents, B.B. Abbott and Al Goetz, the Twins now gain ...

Fancred Sports : Jon Heyman: Eloy Jimenez’s camp unhappy he’s unlikely to play for White Sox this year

What’s the potential CBA fix? Where does this issue fit into the MLBPA’s priority list? I would think gaining a bigger share of MLB revenue would be a more pressing problem to address. The revenue share is also a problem which impacts every member, unlike the service time problem.

Alluding to the players already protesting, Kinzer said, “Eventually, you’ll probably have to add us to the list.”

Not that he seems to be overly optimistic about their prospective case. There’s nothing ...
