Former Cardinal and Met Ray Sadecki dies at 73

He might be best remembered for being the wrong side of a one-sided deal, but he also won 20 games for a world champion and helped the Mets to a pennant in 1973.

Athletics To Sign Billy Butler

Will fans end up celebrating, or Grieve-ing?

The Athletics have agreed to a three-year, $30MM deal with free agent DH Billy Butler, as first reported via Twitter by Robert Murray. ESPN.com’s Buster Olney reports that the deal is finalized.

Some Wrigley rooftops face foreclosure

Fifth Third Bank, which lent rooftop owners Thomas Gramatis, Max Waisvisz, Daniel Finkel and various holding companies about $18.6 million between 2006 and 2012, says the owners haven’t kept up with mortgage payments and owe in excess of $36 million in principal, interests and other fees, according to the court document.

Giancarlo Stanton’s $325M with Miami Marlins heavily backloaded - ESPN

Wow! In the short term Stanton is walking away from a lot of money. Don’t get me wrong. His option years make up for it if he goes in the tank. If he plays well, though, he’s leaving a bunch of money on the table.

If Giancarlo Stanton opts out of his new 13-year, $325 million contract with the Miami Marlins after the first six seasons, he’ll be walking away from a staggering $218 million over the final seven seasons, sources familiar with the deal told ESPN.com Tuesday.

However, one source ...

White Sox To Sign Zach Duke

The White Sox will announce the signing of left-handed reliever Zach Duke later today, reports Dan Hayes of CSNChicago.com (Twitter link)...

Duke quietly had a dominant season in the Brewers’ bullpen in 2014, pitching to an electric 2.45 ERA with 11.4 K/9, 2.6 BB/9 and a 57.7 percent ground-ball rate. Opposing lefties hit just .198/.267/.302 against Duke last year, though righties couldn’t figure him out either, mustering a mere .242/.288/.298 against the well-traveled lefty… With ...

IOC to bring in cheaper, easier bidding for Games (also: Baseball/Softball could be in for 2020)

...

Sports will also not wait seven years from approval to their Olympic first appearance, and instead could be brought in for just one Olympics to maximize the Games’ reach and attraction.

The first Games to benefit could be the Tokyo 2020 Olympics with organizers pushing for the inclusion of baseball and softball.

Giancarlo Stanton may actually prove to be worth reported $325M contract - MLB - SI.com

Jay Jaffe’s take on the Stanton deal. He estimates Stanton’s value of the contract based on the cost per win on the free agent market. I’m not a huge fan of the approach when players are extended. Teams don’t win championships by paying “market” rates for players, especially those still under control for two years. Using the market approach, teams would be making sound financial choices if they spent anything less than $284.2 million for a 95 win team in 2014. (95 wins = 47.6 base wins + 47.4 ...

Is Madison Bumgarner the World’s #1 Starting Pitcher?

The system is straightforward. When a starter makes his major league debut, he begins with 300 points. From there, his rating will go up when he pitches well (based on Game Score). His rating goes down when he pitches poorly or doesn’t pitch at all (including the offseason). Complete details of the system are available both in The Handbook and on Bill James Online.

Toledo News-Bee, November 18, 1914:

Charles W. Murphy, former president of the Cubs, and credited with still holding a large interest in the club, announced on Wednesday that the deal by which Charles Weeghman, owner of the Chicago Federals, was to purchase the Cubs, is off.

...meaning another year of the Federal League-Organized Baseball war. But you all know that already.

Might Yanks revisit their low-key winter plan and shoot for Scherzer? - CBSSports.com

I bet Boras is the one pushing this report.

The Yankees and Scherzer’s agent, Scott Boras, are said to have had a brief contact sometime since returning from the GM meetings, and word is the Yankees may “revisit” their inclination not to make any big expenditures this winter.

According to Cots Contracts, the Blue Jays’ payroll landed at $137,770,000 last season, with Mark Buehrle slated to make the most money of any player on the roster in ’15 ($19 million).

Buehrle at $19 million.

Lisa Saxon, the Woman Who Helped Change Sports Writing Forever

The meeting was brief, and the message was simple: “Lisa, from here on in, you’re not fighting alone. To get to you, Reggie’s gonna have to come through us. We’re tired of watching it.”

“And at the ballpark that night, Reggie tried to come after me, screaming [about the story]. And sure enough, here comes Hendrick and Candelaria, tall and imposing. ‘To get to her, you’re gonna have to go through us.’ Reggie got so mad. He took his fist and banged it into the wall. And ...

Joe Maddon impressed with Rays’ managerial candidates | Tampa Bay Times

He shouldn’t comment on this process. It’s like breaking up with a girl and then months later telling her, “Your new boyfriend seems like a solid candidate to fill the gaping void that I surely left in your life.”

They’ve created a wonderful list, they really have,” Maddon said. “They’ve given themselves an opportunity to interview some really qualified people and make a typically very good Rays decision at the end of the day. I really believe that. You know it’s going to be well thought out, ...

The ever-present trouble-finding small boy got his [in Porterville, California] yesterday. Something besides shingles were loose, however, and the roof collapsed, injuring three youngsters. One was severely hurt. The game which followed the accident ...

Padres catchers Grandal, Rivera will be in demand this winter | UTSanDiego.com

It’s no surprise that the Padres would be open to trading from a surplus—starting pitchers Andrew Cashner, Tyson Ross and Ian Kennedy all have drawn interest—but San Diego’s dynamic behind the plate has changed drastically in the last year. Incumbent starter Yasmani Grandal had a difficult-to-evaluate season, returning from ACL surgery sooner than anyone expected. Journeyman Rene Rivera had a career season, playing better than anyone expected.

So which catcher would the Padres trade first? ...

BtBS: The 2015 Hall of Fame ballot—first-time candidates

Four players deserve some discussion. I’m not even going to waste space on Randy Johnson since his induction is such a foregone conclusion. He is quite likely the last 300-win pitcher baseball will ever see (for those who care), and my only interest will be in the tortured excuses from voters who don’t list Johnson on their ballots. Likewise, I discussed Pedro Martinez at some length a couple weeks ago.

Gary Sheffield and John Smoltz will generate significant discussion.

Detroit Tigers say they won’t re-sign Torii Hunter

Feels like teams are rarely this straightforward about their intentions. I like it, though. Transparency!

Torii Hunter will likely continue to play baseball, but not with the Detroit Tigers.

Tigers general manager/president Dave Dombrowski told reporters today that he called Hunter to tell him he would not be pursued after the club agreed to a four-year contract with designated hitter Victor Martinez.

“I called and said it just didn’t look like it was going to fit the way the club was getting ...

Cubs Acquire Tommy La Stella

This is a super-weird one in terms of team strengths and weaknesses, if nothing else.

The Cubs have announced they have acquired infielder Tommy La Stella from the Braves for right-hander Arodys Vizcaino. The two teams also swapped international bonus slots: the Cubs receiving the Braves’ number four international signing bonus slot in exchange for their slot numbers two, three and four.

Scott Boras Addresses Allegations Surrounding Manny Ramirez - MLB Network Radio on SiriusXM

On of my favorite radio shows is MLB Network’s Front Office. The show features interviews with GMs every week. Today they had an interview with Scott Boras in which they asked him about the Bosch accusations. He answered very lawyerly. It would be interesting to see how he answers the same questions under oath. Now nobody knows the facts of the accusations yet. To find out, the matter needs a full, credible, and comprehensive investigation as the idea that Boras’ agency would be completely in ...
