Feisty Bert Blyleven Trashes Detroit

Circle the Fox Theater, Bert!

While today’s Twins-Tigers game was in a rain delay, former Twins pitcher and current analyst Bert Blyleven updated his Twitter followers with photos of the field, and took some cracks at Detroit’s expense in the process.

Guess I ruffled some feathers with my last tweet about download Detroit! Guess all you that responded haven’t seen how ugly your downtown is

Dodgers acquire reliever Ryan Webb

The Dodgers also got Ward and a competitive-balance draft pick, No. 74 overall, in exchange for pitcher Ben Rowen and catcher Chris O’Brien. That pick, which falls between the second and third rounds, has a slot value of $827,000, according to Baseball America.

So it looks like the Orioles gave up the 74th pick so they could save $2.75m on Webb’s salary. Rowen was a pre-arb player released by the Rangers in December. O’Brien’s upside is a potential future third string catcher. Brian Ward ...

Joe Nathan placed on DL with a strained right elbow

On Wednesday, general manager Dave Dombrowki announced that Nathan is headed to the disabled list with a right elbow flexor strain.

Nathan faced one batter in Monday’s 4-0 victory against the Minnesota Twins, striking out former teammate Torii Hunter to earn the save. But that might prove to be a costly save. On his final pitch, Nathan first felt discomfort, and according to manager Brad Ausmus it was determined on Wednesday that Nathan will require rest before being reevaluated later in the ...

Prince Fielder does squats with teammate Rougned Odor on his back

Rangers’ second baseman Rougned Odor plays the role of the willing participant during the workout. Odor is listed at 190 pounds, according to Baseball-Reference.com. Personally, we think Fielder can handle more than that, but he doesn’t have to prove anything to us.

Look at these special gold caps the Giants will wear at their ring ceremony

The San Francisco Giants get their World Series rings on April 18 at a pre-game celebration at AT&T Park. The team is used to this by now — what with three ring ceremonies in five years.

But there’s something special for this year’s party and the ensuing game. The Giants will wear these fancy gold-accented caps made by New Era. Notice the World Series trophy on the back. It’s something else that sets the 2014 World Series cap apart from your regular ol’ Giants fitted.

Of course, the special ...

Mariners fan uses popcorn bucket to catch a foul ball

If you aren’t the type who brings a glove to the game, you’re going to come away with a sore hand or two. Well, unless you’re this inventive Mariners fan.

This fan ... no, this hero ... finds a way to make it work. He didn’t bring his glove to the game because he’s not 12, but he still gets the job done in the Mariners’ 2-0 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night. While he seems to have lost a significant amount of popcorn, it’s worth the parties future generations will throw in his honor.

Neyer: Russell tussles with knuckles

Last season, Dickey had a personal catcher: Josh Thole. And it wasn’t just last season. First with the Mets and then the Blue Jays, Thole backstopped Dickey’s butterflies for five seasons.

This season, Josh Thole’s in the minor leagues, at least until the Jays trade Dioner Navarro. So Wednesday night, Russell Martin got the start behind the plate.

I got to wondering about the relative importance of framing knuckleballs, and asked our friends at Baseball Info Solutions to look at some numbers. ...Read More...

Calcaterra: A’s rookie Mark Canha did the “Bull Durham” cliche thing after his debut

Whaddaya know? Meat wrote it down.

This morning in the recaps I noted that I had never heard of A’s rookie Mark Canha. Now I am certain to never, ever forget him, because he is an instant legend.

No, not because he went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI in his debut (though that’s awesome) but because he dropped the “Bull Durham” “Good Lord Willin’ . . .” cliche speech in the postgame interview, basically word for word.

MLB sends pace-of-game warning letters to players

Who do you think got em?

MLB officials have begun issuing written warnings to several players who have violated the league’s new pace of game rules.

MLB spokesman Mike Teevan told Perform Media on Wednesday night that fines for violating the rules would begin May 1, but players would have a “grace period” during the first month of games.

“We’re working with the players on this and want to use April to educate them,” Teevan said.

The Associated Press reported that at least 10 letters have ...

Hyun-jin Ryu rapped about credit cards in a Korean commercial

Opa Hyun-jin Style?

Dodgers starter Hyun-jin Ryu is a big star in his native Korea, which is why he stars in goofy commercials like this one.

Last fall, Ryu starred in an ad for ramen that also featured a fake Clayton Kershaw. Now he’s rapping to promote credit cards for a Korean bank. His outfit is spot-on and the Mission Impossible theme makes for a pretty good beat.

Ryu is currently on the disabled list with a shoulder injury. He’ll be back soon enough, but it’s nice to know that he ...

These screen shots contain the data and RPA ratings against each of the 6 types of pitchers faced. You will need an adequate sized screen to see the detail.

Also: the team ratings (including every player and pitcher) on every American league Team from 1901 - 1980 and EVERY National League team from 1900 - 1970 can also be viewed.

Curtis Granderson’s continued evolution of his offensive approach - Beyond the Box Score

I’m sold on Curtis Granderson this year. First, as the article mentions, he made some adjustments in his pitch selection last year. Second, he’s tweaked his swing this off-season, cutting out most of the hitch he had in his swing.
