A key figure in the Black Sox scandal “retires”, Washington Times, November 28, 1912:

Abe Attell, former featherweight champion, last night announced his retirement from the ring after he had been badly outpointed in a fight with Oliver Kirk, of St. Louis. When the gong sounded at the end of the sixth round…[Attell] announed that he had enough, that he had given “the best that was in him,” and that he was forever through with prize fighting.

Attell fought Kirk again less than four months later. I’m sure the fight referenced above was completely on the level, because a guy like Attell would never have taken money to take a fall in his opponent’s hometown. *snicker*
