Orioles and Blue Jays discussed Adam Lind trade

According to multiple sources, they spoke to the Blue Jays about first baseman Adam Lind and were unable to agree on a return before he was traded to the Brewers last weekend for pitcher Marco Estrada.

The Jays wanted first baseman/outfielder Steve Pearce, according to sources, but the Orioles weren’t willing to part with him.

Lind became expendable after the Jays claimed first baseman Justin Smoak off waivers from the Mariners. They also have Edwin Encarnacion to play first and rotate at designated hitter.

The Brewers have acquired 1B/OF Adam Lind from the Blue Jays, possibly pending physicals, Chris Cotillo of MLB Daily Dish tweets. SportsNet.ca’s Ben Nicholson-Smith initially reported the two sides were close to a deal. The Jays will receive righty Marco Estrada in return, Andrew Walker of Sports590.ca tweets.

The Blue Jays exercised Lind’s $7.5MM option on Lind earlier today, and Lind’s contract also includes a 2016 option for $8MM, or a $500K buyout… Lind hit .321/.381/.479 in 290 plate appearances this season, but the Jays’ acquisition of another lefty first baseman, Justin Smoak, last week was a possible indication that they were planning for Lind’s departure…

Estrada posted a 4.36 ERA with 7.6 K/9 and 2.6 BB/9 for the Brewers in 2014. He’s entering his last season of arbitration eligibility (in which he’s projected to make $4.7MM) before he can become a free agent… The Blue Jays currently appear mostly set in their rotation, particularly after picking up J.A. Happ‘s option last night, so Estrada could be ticketed for the bullpen.

Blue Jays lose Adam Lind following loss to Angels

The list of the Blue Jays’ walking wounded grew, in a literal sense, on Wednesday when it was learned after Toronto’s 8-7 loss to the Angels that DH Adam Lind is suffering from a non-displaced fracture of the bone in his right foot that connects to the big toe. He injured the foot in Baltimore on June 14 but did not have an MRI done until Tuesday in California.

“My mom wanted me to get an MRI, which I hadn’t had yet,” Lind said. “It wasn’t getting any better, so I asked for an MRI and it showed up. The doctors here said six to eight weeks. I’m going to go to Charlotte on Friday, see the doctor there. They’re hoping it’s a better diagnosis than the doctors here.”

The injury occurred 25 days ago. He missed the next four days. Lind was asked if he was surprised that it took so long to discover the fracture. He paused before answering.

“I don’t know if I’m surprised,” he said. “They just said a bone bruise (in Baltimore). They said you couldn’t do any more damage. I wasn’t showing any improvement and I’d had enough, really. I needed another exam, an X-ray and a CT scan.”
