Rick Ankiel drank vodka before starts to ease anxiety

Former major leaguer Rick Ankiel said Monday that he drank vodka before his first two starts of the 2001 season for the St. Louis Cardinals, which came after his meltdown in the 2000 playoffs when he became the first major league pitcher to throw five wild pitches in one inning since 1890.

Ankiel made his comments to 590 The Fan while discussing his upcoming book, “The Phenomenon: Pressure, the Yips, and the Pitch that Changed My Life,” co-written with sports writer Tim Brown. The book will be released on April 18.

On Monday, he discussed drinking vodka before his first start of the 2001 season, in which he was the winning pitcher against Randy Johnson and the Arizona Diamondbacks.

“Before that game ... I’m scared to death. I know I have no chance. Feeling the pressure of all that, right before the game I get a bottle of vodka. I just started drinking vodka. Lo and behold, it kind of tamed the monster, and I was able to do what I wanted,” he said in the radio interview.

Miami Herald: Marlins star Jose Fernandez was legally drunk, had cocaine in blood when he died, medical examiner says

Marlins star pitcher Jose Fernandez was legally drunk and had cocaine in his system when he died in a boat crash off South Beach last month, according to a toxicology report released Saturday.

While his two companions had alcohol in their systems, neither was legally drunk, the reports show. However, one of them, Eduardo Rivero, also had cocaine in his blood, the reports show.

Fernandez had a blood-alcohol content level of 0.147, well above the legal limit of .08. Other fluids in his body measured at exactly double the legal limit.

The crash was being investigated by the Florida Fish & Wildlife Conservation Commission, which initially claimed the documents could not be released because of an active criminal investigation. However, the Herald contended that no criminal charges could be brought because everyone on board died.

The records were released after the FWC declined to be a party to the lawsuit.

Fernandez, 24, died when his 32-foot boat plowed into the Government Cut north jetty before dawn on Sept. 25. Two others on the boat with him, Emilio Jesus Macias, 27, and 25-year-old Rivero were also killed.

The reports do not indicate who was piloting the vessel, which was owned by Fernandez.

ESPN: Jose Fernandez, friends reportedly had strong odor of alcohol after deadly boat crash

#smdh

Miami-Dade County authorities say the strong odor of alcohol was found on Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez and two other men in a boat when they died in a crash last month, according to a search warrant affidavit obtained by the Miami Herald.

The warrant, released by the Miami-Dade state attorney, alleges investigators found evidence that the boat’s driver was speeding and driving with “recklessness” that was “exacerbated by the consumption of alcohol.” It does not identify who was driving.

The warrant was prepared so that investigators would search the boat, look at its GPS and examine its two engines, the Herald reported.

Toxicology reports are complete but have not been released by state investigators, the Herald reported. The newspaper said that authorities cited an exemption in public records law for releasing information as part of an open criminal investigation.
