John Coppolella on Trading Andrelton Simmons | FanGraphs Baseball

“The New York Yankees made a run at Simmons last off-season so there was history and familiarity there with (Angels GM, and former Yankees assistant GM) Billy Eppler. Billy called me the first week of the off-season and asked about Simmons. I told him we would listen on anybody, but weren’t looking to trade Simmons.

“We spoke on and off for three weeks, sometimes on the phone and sometimes on text, where each party made offers that were ultimately declined by the other party. Billy and I met Tuesday night, one-on-one for over two hours, and got the ball to the one-yard line. The delays after Tuesday night on both side were more about ownership, etc.”

MLB: Andrelton Simmons wins Defensive Player of the Year Award (Video)

TIL that in 2012 Wilson started up their own off brand Gold Glove award.

Braves open to talks about Andrelton Simmons |

This is surprising.

The Braves are listening to some clubs that have shown interest in Andrelton Simmons, but this does not mean they are actively shopping the young shortstop, who is widely considered one of the game’s top defensive assets.

The 2015 Fielding Bible Awards

How on earth did Rafael Palmeiro win this?

Unsurprisingly, Simmons also won a Fielding Bible Award this season. Both were unanimous winners, as was Jason Heyward in right field.

Simmons and Heyward were two of the four total repeat winners this season. Simmons has unanimously won the Award in each of his three full seasons in the majors and is the best defensive player in baseball today. Former teammate Heyward won his third Award in right field, though this year it was as a member of the Cardinals. Diamondbacks first baseman Paul Goldschmidt and Astros pitcher Dallas Keuchel each won their second Awards.

The first-time winners include Ian Kinsler at second base, Nolan Arenado at third base, Starling Marte in left field, Kiermaier in center field, Buster Posey at catcher, and Ender Inciarte at multi-position.

The 10 best active MLB players who have never made an All-Star team

Shoulda played for the Royals, I guess.

1. Shin-Soo Choo

If you made a “most underrated players” list from 2008 through 2013 and didn’t include Choo, they broke down your door and took your children away. Everyone knew that Choo was underrated, and that almost made him overrated, but just the thought of him being overrated made him underrated again. For two straight years in Cleveland, Choo hit over .300, was among the league leaders in on-base percentage, and slugged close to .500.

Choo’s problem: too consistent. He never had one of those wacky first halves, where he’d hit 15 homers and get on base 48 percent of the time, only to regress to the mean in the second half. He was always calm and cool, hitting for average (but not that high), getting on base (but not that much), and hitting the occasional dinger (but not that many). He probably deserved a selection or two, but there was always an outfielder who wasn’t so consistent and accumulating all of his value in the first half. That’s how the AL got Jason Bay starting in left field one year—he was a known quantity who had a bananas first half.

The perennial snub didn’t hurt Choo in free agency, of course, and now he’s in the second phase of his career, where he’s still making lists, but the wrong lists for the wrong reasons.
