MLB roundup: Harper leads Phillies to series sweep

Bryce Harper reached base four times and hit a solo home run in the seventh inning as the Philadelphia Phillies completed a three-game sweep of the visiting Atlanta Braves with a 5-1 win on Sunday night.

The Phillies are 3-0 for the first time since 2011.

Philadelphia starting pitcher Jake Arrieta (1-0) gave up one run on three hits in six innings. He struck out six, but he also walked six while throwing 104 pitches.

Andrew McCutchen also hit a solo home run and scored twice for the Phillies. Rhys Hoskins walked three times and was hit by a pitch to reach base in all four plate appearances. He was plunked after Harper’s home run, and Braves reliever Shane Carle was ejected immediately afterward.

Yesterday’s game results, today!

McCutchen ready to boost Phillies in all sorts of ways

CLEARWATER, Fla. (AP) — Andrew McCutchen is ready to boost the Philadelphia Phillies with his bat, glove and brain.

Signed to a $50 million, three-year contract, McCutchen said he enjoys his role as the veteran in the outfield and likes what he’s seen from his younger teammates.

The 32-year-old McCutchen is set to start in left. He returns to the National League after finishing up last season with the New York Yankees — he spent his first nine seasons in Pittsburgh, joined San Francisco last year and then was traded to the Bronx.

Mind you, that’s what the Giants thought last year, and look how well it worked for them….

Andrew McCutchen eager to play in hitter friendly ballpark

PHILADELPHIA-Andrew McCutchen returned to his home state to join his third team in less than 12 months, intent on regaining his old hitting stroke.

The Philadelphia Phillies introduced their newest outfielder at a news conference Tuesday, a week after giving him a $50 million, three-year contract that includes a team option for 2022 and could be worth $62 million over four seasons.

“This is a game of adjustments,” McCutchen said. “I’ve definitely had to make some adjustments over the years, and I know that I can be even better than what I’ve been over the past few (seasons). There has been a decline, yes, but I do understand what I’m capable of doing.

Best wishes- shame things went for you in San Francisco as they did, but I sincerely hope it isn’t the end.

Winter Meetings Recap: Bryce Harper Lays Low, MLB Can’t Promote and the Rays Make a Splash

LAS VEGAS — It was only two years ago that people immediately declared the White Sox the “winners” of the winter meetings because they acquired prospects with heavy buzz, including Yoan Moncada, Michael Kopech, Lucas Giolito and Reynaldo Lopez. Moncado is a .234 hitter who has fanned in 34 percent of his plate appearances, Kopech blew out his elbow, Giolito posted a 6.13 ERA this year, Lopez has a 4.21 ERA in 51 career games, and the White Sox have lost 195 games and 130,000 paid customers in the two seasons since.

Nobody’s giving up on them, but maybe we should give up on the whole “winners and losers” thing as instant judgment of the winter meetings. This time, as baseball is leaving Las Vegas after yet another hum-drum winter meetings, let’s try this: here’s what we learned from these meetings:

A summary account of do-tos involving the Winter Meetings, with quite a bit to debate and ponder.

Phillies To Sign Andrew McCutchen

The Phillies have a deal in place with free agent outfielder Andrew McCutchen, according to Matt Gelb of The Athletic (Twitter link). The agreement is still pending a physical.

McCutchen will reportedly receive a three-year, $50MM contract that includes an option for a fourth season. Jim Salisbury of NBC Sports Philly (via Twitter), who first broke the news that the sides were in serious talks, reported the years, with Jon Heyman of Fancred reporting the guarantee and option year (Twitter links).
