Andrew McCutchen exits with knee discomfort | MLB.com

“If a knee can get a cramp, that’s what it felt like,” McCutchen said. “Your knee kind of locks up. You wait for it to go away, it goes away. That’s what I was trying to do—wait for it to go away—and it never went away. I knew if I tried to run, I’d be base-to-base. Next thing I know, I’ve got some angry fans screaming, ‘Why didn’t Cutch score?’”

Pirates top prospect Austin Meadows getting major-league ‘vibe’ | Pittsburgh Post-Gazette

It’s always tough making judgments on the outside but Andrew McCutchen seems like a really good guy.

“McCutchen told him, ‘Trust the process,’ “ Meadows’ father, Kenny, recalled. “Austin took that to heart. A lot of kids coming out of high school think they’re going to go right to the big leagues.”

Meadows, 21, isn’t there yet, but he’s no longer so far off. A non-roster invitee at major league camp this spring, he’s taken advantage of the extra at-bats available in the absence of McCutchen, Starling Marte and Gregory Polanco, who are away at the World Baseball Classic.

The Curious Case of Cutch: Andrew McCutchen on his lost 2016, and why 2017 will be better

Only two players that debuted on the day a pitcher won their 300th game went on to post at least 10 bWAR: McCutchen and Randy Myers. Here’s hoping McCutchen can rediscover his stroke.

Regarding the worst, most mystifying season of his career, Pirates outfielder Andrew McCutchen made a startling admission to me: He lost his nerve to run.

Slumps are the viral illnesses of a hitter. They strike without warning or known cause and run their course, be they days, weeks or, in McCutchen’s case last year, five months. They happen. But perhaps most alarming about McCutchen’s 2016 season was the poor body language from one of baseball’s best and most exciting base runners.

McCutchen didn’t try to steal bases very often, and when he did, he was thrown out more times (seven) than he was successful (six). Just three years earlier, in his MVP-winning season of 2013, McCutchen had advanced from first base to third base on nearly half the singles his teammates hit. He did so only 17% of the time last year—just five times all season. He went first-to-third less than slow-footed Albert Pujols and 173 other players.

Andrew McCutchen’s vow after Pirates dangle him: ‘I’m going to have monster year’

“I’m not going to hold any grudges against them,” says McCutchen, a five-time All-Star. “I mean, I have people who say it should be my choice because of the sacrifices I’ve made and the things I’ve done for the organization. But l ’m not going to be angry.

“I’m just going to go out and play my game because that’s my job. I work for them. They are my bosses.

“They ask me to do something, it means I have to do it.”
