What do you do with players who have large contracts but can’t play any more?

It is a problem that the NFL has always dealt with by featuring non-guaranteed contracts, something that executives with the Major League Baseball Players Association would never agree to, barring their presence on a firing squad. But while these guaranteed contracts are great for the players, they are a growing problem for the teams, and generally a hindrance to the game, especially in an era where seven and eight-year contracts have become too commonplace. After all, roster spots and playing time should be based on merit, and not the size of a player’s paycheck. I would not be shocked to see the owners raise the issue of guaranteed contracts the next time the two sides meet to discuss a new Collective Bargaining Agreement; it will be interesting to hear the reaction from the union.
