LEADING OFF: Wild-card hopefuls set for key weekend series

STILL FIGHTING

The Rays got themselves off the ropes by rallying late to beat Houston on Thursday night, ending a four-game skid. Now the AL wild-card hopefuls open a pivotal three-game home series against Cleveland. The Indians are 2 1/2 games ahead of Tampa Bay for the top wild-card spot, with Oakland one game ahead for the Rays for the second. All-Star Game MVP Shane Bieber (12-6, 3.23) is set to pitch or Cleveland against RHP Austin Pruitt (2-0, 5.57).

PULLING AWAY?

The Cubs host the Brewers hoping to bury another NL wild-card competitor after sweeping the Mets over three games this week. Chicago pulled five games ahead of New York for the second wild card and is four games ahead of Milwaukee. LHP Jose Quintana (11-8, 4.05) will start for the Cubs in the matinee against RHP Chase Anderson (6-3, 4.34).

This competition is not just in the majors- in Triple-A baseball, many playoff spots are still in contention with only a few games left in the season.

Similarly, Triple-A is starting its last homestands of the season, and there’s still competition in both the PCL and the International League to enter their playoffs.

LEADING OFF: DeGrom aims to right Mets, Ryu tries to rebound

DOING IT ALL

Jacob deGrom (8-7, 2.56 ERA) tries to stop the Mets’ five-game skid when he faces Cubs lefty Jon Lester (10-9, 4.49) in a series finale between playoff hopefuls at Citi Field. Last year’s NL Cy Young Award winner, deGrom has pitched himself right back into contention this season and leads the league with 207 strikeouts. He fanned 13 over seven innings and homered last time out but the Mets lost 2-1 to Atlanta in 14 innings. The right-hander is the first pitcher since at least 1900 to homer and strike out 13 or more in the same game twice in one season.

BUMP IN THE ROAD

Major league ERA leader Hyun-Jin Ryu (12-4) looks to rebound from a rough outing when he pitches for the NL West-leading Dodgers at Arizona. The All-Star lefty gave up a grand slam to Didi Gregorius last Friday and was tagged by the New York Yankees for a career high-tying seven runs and nine hits in 4 1/3 innings — his shortest outing since June 28. It was Ryu’s second consecutive loss, and his ERA jumped from 1.64 to 2.00.

The Mets being what they are, is this something deGrom has a chance at?

Reds’ Aristides Aquino sets MLB record for most home runs in first 100 plate appearances

Reds rookie superdestroyer Aristides Aquino entered Wednesday night’s game against the Marlins (CIN-MIA GameTracker) sitting on 99 career plate appearances. That’s significant because he came in tied for the most home runs in MLB history through a hitter’s first 100 plate appearances, and he had one shot to own the record all by himself. Here’s what he did with that one shot

13 home runs in 100 plate appearances- prorated for a full season, that’s around 90 home runs.

Can Ronald Acuña Jr. join 40-40 club after becoming second youngest to 30-30?

Major League Baseball won’t have the spotlight to itself for much longer. The NFL and college football seasons are upon us, meaning fans attention will be divided in the weeks and months ahead.

Some of the league’s brightest superstars did their part to keep that spotlight on Friday. That includes Atlanta Braves outfielder Ronald Acuña Jr. In Friday’s thrilling 2-1, 14-inning win against the New York Mets, Acuña became the newest member of MLB’s 30-30.

Now his sights are set an even more exclusive club: 40-40.

That was just one notable moment in a night filled with milestones, comebacks and records that highlight how fun and unpredictable baseball can be.

A collection of assorted trivia- as for the question in the title, the answer seems obvious enough, especially given what his stolen base rate has been so far versus what it would need to be.

Astros, Reds rookie sluggers rewrite baseball history with three-homer games

The rookies are taking over Major League Baseball.

We’ve heard all the buzz surrounding Pete Alonso, Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Fernando Tatis Jr., just to name a few.

On Saturday, it was Yordan Alvarez of the Houston Astros and Aristides Aquino of the Cincinnati Reds who rewrote the history books by becoming the first pair of rookie sluggers to each hit three home runs on the same day.

And that tidbit was just the tip of the iceberg.

So, are the rookies actually taking over, and, if so, why?
