Arizona Diamondbacks Newsbeat

In the original draft of this post, this portion talked about how it was at least plausible that being hit in the back one night and coming up with a strained oblique (which is what this really looked like) the next night could be unrelated. We could infer, but not say for sure. Pirates fans could be angry at the Diamondbacks, but no one could be certain. Now, it’s come out that McCutchen actually fractured a rib – he has *deep breath* “an avulsion fracture involving the costochondral cartilage of the left 11th rib” – and so what can I say other than: Have at it, Pittsburgh. It certainly seems like your season has been irreparably altered by a gutless act from a terrible team with a bad reputation, even if there’s at least some opinions that say otherwise.
Anyway, regardless of the cause, the Pirates now need to try to win without their best player for some amount of time…

It’s annoying when the Diamondbacks complain about who jumps in their pool or bad-mouth a player who’s on the way out, under the cover of anonymity. They’re going to lose a lot, which matters to me not at all, because I’m one of the fortunate folks whose happiness isn’t based on the Diamondbacks’ success. I can even live with Gibson and Miguel Montero taking the “we’re not happy until you’re not happy” approach after losses, because if the Diamondbacks aren’t going to have fun when they lose, the Dodgers or whoever else aren’t allowed to have fun when they win.
Where they cross the line is by throwing at hitters.

The New York Yankees have acquired right-hander Brandon McCarthy from the Arizona Diamondbacks in exchange for left-hander Vidal Nuno, FOX Sports 1 Insider Ken Rosenthal reports.
The benefit for the Yankees here seems fairly obvious. I’m a bit more quizzical about the Diamondbacks’ perspective - maybe they were primarily motivated by a desire to unload McCarthy’s salary, and plan to stick Nuno into the LHRP slot just vacated by Thatcher?

An excellent, lengthy profile of one of baseball’s most interesting managers. Tons of interesting anecdotes and insights. RTFA.
Another thing Showalter harps on is that it’s the players’ job to respect their fans. Again, some get it, and some don’t. To the players who don’t get it, the fans’ purpose is simply to worship them and pay their salaries. But Showalter is devoted to the fans, always recalling his years in the minor leagues as a player, coach and manager. Those parks are small, the fans close to the action. They can talk to the players in the on-deck circle, the manager standing in the dugout, the coach at third base. Those fans feel that they’re part of the team, close to the players in a way that major league fans, at a distant remove, never are. When Showalter finally got to the majors, he brought with him his respect for the fans. When the Orioles were playing a meaningless game in Seattle one night, Showalter hounded his players to play hard, because “it’s 12:30 at night back in Baltimore,” he said. “Somebody’s sitting in front of the TV, dying with everything you’re doing. And you better take that seriously.”
