Balk plates tiebreaking run, lifts Diamondbacks over Dodgers

PHOENIX (AP) — A balk by Dodgers reliever Yimi Garcia sent home the tiebreaking run in the bottom of the eighth inning and helped the Arizona Diamondbacks to a 5-4 win over Los Angeles on Friday night.

With one out, Garcia (1-4) stepped off the rubber, turned abruptly to check Arizona’s Adam Jones at first base and didn’t throw over. The move was called a balk and allowed Tim Locastro to trot home from third base.

Archie Bradley (4-5) earned the win with 1 2/3 scoreless innings. Josh Rojas’ first big league home run tied the game at 4-all. Eduardo Escobar also homered for Arizona.

The game ended with a little drama as Escobar nearly booted a hard grounder to third by Justin Turner but recovered and threw out Turner at first base, stranding two runners.

As a side-note, this victory ended a record-setting streak by the Diamondbacks where they were within two games of .500 for over two months.

Kenley Jansen executed a rare intentional balk last night

Last night, Kenley Jansen recorded a save against the Cubs in a 5-3 win for the Dodgers. He surrendered a baserunner on a Matt Beaty error but otherwise was dominant and he struck out three.

Before the final strikeout, however, he did something I hadn’t seen before. With Jason Heyward on second apparently annoying him, Kenley intentionally balked him to third so he could just focus on the batter and/or to prevent Heyward for relaying pitch and/or location to Victor Caratini.

He yells out “I’m going to balk”.

I’ve never seen such a thing. Have you?
