10 Degrees: Is a juiced ball causing MLB’s large home run spike? - Yahoo Sports

At the risk of sounding like someone who believes in chemtrails and listens to Infowars religiously, I have a confession to make: More and more I’m convinced that juiced balls are causing a home run spike throughout baseball.

I am far from the only one. It’s hitters and pitchers and coaches and executives and even rational, cogent analysts who cannot find a reasonable explanation for the spike in home runs dating back to last August. The HR/FB rate – the percentage of fly balls that end up over the fence – spiked over the season’s final two months, and it has continued this April.

Could the baseball be responsible for the surge in HRs in 2015? | FOX Sports

There is a big difference between 2001 and 2015; we have Statcast/pitchFx on *every pitch*. If the ball was juiced in 2015, it’s something quantifiable. The data is there. Rob needs to either prove it or drop it.

And whaddayaknow, home runs were way, way up in 2015. They were up not because all those big boys were making more contact (again, they weren’t) but rather because when they did make contact, a significantly higher percentage of batted balls were flying over the outfield walls. In the second half of 2015, 4.1 percent of batted balls became home runs. That 4.1 percent is one of the five highest half-season percentages since the 2000 season ... and (here’s the kicker!) three of the other four were in 2000 and 2001 (with the fourth in 2004).
