Nick Johnson thinks Brandon McCarthy is injury-prone.
Dodgers pitcher Brandon McCarthy got bad news with the results of his MRI on Monday. The right-hander has a torn ulnar collateral ligament in his right elbow, and is out for the season.
The club placed McCarthy on the 15-day disabled list on Monday. He is still talking though his options with doctors, but it seems unavoidable that Tommy John surgery in in McCarthy’s future.
“It certainly looks one direction and I don’t want to be one of those guys who plays the string out for a few months only to kind of waste everybody’s time, myself included,” McCarthy said. “If we need to get it done, we’ll get it done.”
The return timetable if McCarthy has surgery is 14-15 months, essentially putting him out until the 2016 All-Star break.

The pitcher admits that he’s struggled with what side of the issue he falls on, calling it a “mess,” but writes that ultimately the Hall is better off creating a “comprehensive, all-encompassing look at the history of baseball,” one that includes PED users if they deserve to be enshrined on the merits of their play.
From a historical perspective, both the good and the bad of the sport should be acknowledged. The rich tapestry of ups and downs, heroes and villains, scandals and rebirths gives baseball a depth unlike any other sport we have in this country. Because of this, writers should leave Hall of Fame voting to on-the-field accomplishments and let their words shape the stories and reputations we pass down to the next generation.
McCarthy also gave his picks for who should’ve been inducted to this year’s Hall of Fame class. In addition to those who were chosen (John Smoltz, Pedro Martinez, Randy Johnson and Craig Biggio), McCarthy says he would’ve voted for Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens, Mike Mussina, Curt Schilling, Tim Raines, Alan Trammell and Mike Piazza.

The Dodgers have reportedly maxed out their frequent shopper card at the winter meetings on Wednesday, closing in on yet another transaction. The team is close to a four-year contract with starting pitcher Brandon McCarthy, per Ken Rosenthal of Fox Sports and confirmed by Jon Heyman of CBS Sports.
McCarthy had a sneakily good season in 2014, the first fully healthy campaign of his career. The right-hander was 10-15 with a 4.05 ERA between the Diamondbacks and Yankees. His peripherals were much better, with 175 strikeouts and only 35 walks in 200 innings. McCarthy ranked 35th among 88 qualified starters in MLB with a 3.55 FIP and ninth with a 2.87 xFIP.
Four years is a long time for the 31-year-old McCarthy, who has averaged 24 starts and 154 innings in the last four seasons. In addition to suffering a skull fracture from a line drive off his head that knocked him out of the final 26 games of 2012, it’s McCarthy’s right shoulder that has been the brunt of the problem.
