Brett Lawrie = good dude
The Toronto Blue Jays recently acquired third baseman Josh Donaldson from the Oakland Athletics in exchange for infielder Brett Lawrie and a few other players. While many Blue Jays fans would agree that the trade helped the team, one six-year-old fan was heartbroken over losing her precious Lawrie.
Lawrie deserves the good guy award. He tracked down his heartbroken fan named Ameilia and spent some time with her, hanging out and grabbing some pizza.

A GM should have no untouchables. Like with Donaldson, a GM might not want to deal a player but once the return gets high enough you have to pull the trigger. If his scouts and his number crunchers like the players, he makes the deal. After making the deal it’s up to the player development people and the major league coaches to get the most out of the acquired players. Granted the A’s are losing five years of Donaldson but they are potentially getting a lot years from the new guys. With the A’s track record, I’d say the chances the Beane will come out looking good on this deal ten years from now are pretty good.
Gold-Glove caliber defenders who offer power and durability rarely become available with this much service time remaining. And truth be told, Donaldson wasn’t available, at least not the first time the Blue Jays asked in October.
But Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos called Beane again last weekend and essentially said, “What if I really made it worth your while?”
Anthopoulos did. And on Friday night, Beane moved Donaldson in what is certain to be one of his most scrutinized deals yet — and yes, that is saying something.
I have no idea where Beane is going with all this. I have no idea what kind of team the Athletics will be next season. All I know is that Beane just traded four years of Josh Donaldson. And that at first blush, many will find it difficult to accept this move.

A’s fans: “I Spit on Your Graveman!”
The Blue Jays have struck a deal to acquire third baseman Josh Donaldson from the Athletics, according to Ken Rosenthal of FOX Sports (Twitter links). Infielder Brett Lawrie, righty Kendall Graveman, and shortstop Franklin Barreto are part of the package going back. Prospect Sean Nolin is also in the deal, Jeff Passan of Yahoo Sports tweets...
Donaldson has racked up 15.4 rWAR and 14.1 fWAR in [the past two years]... Projected by Matt Swartz/MLBTR to earn $4.5MM in his Super Two season of arbitration eligibility, Donaldson was just starting off on a track to become rather pricey. But he comes with four seasons of control…
Though significantly younger, Lawrie comes with one less year of control. He is, however, projected to take home just $1.8MM this season and will therefore also have a much lower starting point for his next two seasons of earnings… Over his first three-plus seasons in the bigs, Lawrie owns a .265/.323/.426 slash (good for a 104 OPS+) and has generally drawn solid-to-outstanding reviews on his defensive work…
Barreto could be the hidden gem in the package, with Ben Badler of Baseball America noting on Twitter that the 18-year-old was the top July 2 prospect of two years prior and is probably at top-100 level player at this point.

Brett Lawrie is back on the disabled list, this time with a left oblique strain that could force him to miss roughly a month of action with the Toronto Blue Jays.
Lawrie’s latest injury comes at a critical time for the Jays, who are battling for a playoff spot with three of their key offensive players on the disabled list.
The club announced Thursday that Lawrie was back on the DL, just two days after returning to the lineup after missing 36 games with a broken right index finger. It was not immediately known how he suffered the oblique strain, which affects a large muscle that covers the rib cage.
This is the third time in two years that Lawrie has suffered an oblique strain. He landed on the DL in spring training of 2013 (March 22) with a left oblique strain and returned to action April 16. In 2012 he missed a month with a right oblique strain.
