Mets GM tells Mike Francesa that team doesn’t have room for Bryce Harper, Manny Machado

If their top decision-maker is to be believed, the New York Mets really would love to have Bryce Harper or Manny Machado on their team. They just have some pesky players that are also pretty decent in the way.

Mets general manager Brodie Van Wagenen appeared on Mike Francesa’s WFAN show on Monday, and the conversation naturally turned to baseball’s two biggest free agents.

Van Wagenen praised both players, but he also indicated that he doesn’t believe they are the right fit for the Mets.

Mind you, given the team’s gift for breaking players, I have to suspect that the feeling is mutual….

WATCH: Mets’ Brodie Van Wagenen challenges other GMs to Home Run Derby

There is only two weeks left before pitchers and catchers report to Port St. Lucie to begin the new Mets season. Every player has been working diligently to get ready to compete during the long grind this year, as everyone in the organization looks to secure the coveted World Series trophy.

And that includes Mets new GM Brodie Van Wagenen.

Van Wagenen showed off his sweet swing with a nice blue and orange bat, as he got his own reps in before spring training. Just as he has all offseason, Van Wagenen displayed his confidence by challenging the other MLB GMs to a Home Run Derby.

If this is the way Brodie Van Wagenen is acting in the off-season, I’d hate to imagine how insufferable he’ll get come August….

Brodie Van Wagenen challenges rest of NL East after adding Jed Lowrie on two-year deal

NEW YORK — Brodie Van Wagenen certainly does not lack confidence.

The Mets general manager said last month he believes the Mets are the division favorites, and that stance hasn’t softened a month later, especially after adding All-Star infielder Jed Lowrie on a two-year, $20-million deal.

“We are a good team, We are a complete team, we are a balanced team. We’ve got veterans, we’ve got youth, we’ve got a hunger and desire to win and I look forward to showing people we’re a team to be reckoned with,” Van Wagenen said. “Let’s not be shy about wanting to be the best and I fully expect us to be competitive and be a winning team. Our goal is to win a championship and it starts with the division so come get us.”

Nothing could possibly go wrong here!

Will Mets’ near $200 million spending spree actually pay off?

Has a new era of New York Mets baseball arrived?

It almost feels that way, though we could never blame Mets fans for being skeptical.

Here’s what we know: After several offseasons where the Mets were barely a blip on the Hot Stove radar, new general manager Brodie Van Wagenen has made up for lost time this winter. More significantly, he’s digging deep into the cash register and spending money the organization has seemingly tried to convince fans it didn’t have.

Given that this is the Mets, I suspect that the answer to these questions will make Betteridge proud….

Mets Release David Wright, Move Him into Special Adviser Role to COO and GM

The New York Mets announced Monday former third baseman David Wright has agreed to join the team’s front office as a special adviser to COO Jeff Wilpon and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen.

Wright was also released from the active roster with the move despite having two more years under contract with the team.

Can David Wright offer any worse advice than everyone else has given the Mets in the last few decades?

Mets as NL East favorites in 2019? GM Brodie Van Wagenen is thinking that way during busy offseason

On the one hand, I’ve worked with people just as delusional- on the other hand, they were folk they didn’t trust with research budgets, much less anything as valuable as an MLB team….

Tim Tebow will get major-league promotion if he deserves it, Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen says

NEW YORK — Celebrity outfielder Tim Tebow is still a Met, and general manager Brodie Van Wagenen and chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon talked him up during their appearance on WFAN Wednesday.

“We need him at Syracuse,” said Wilpon, referencing the Mets-owned Triple-A affiliate. “He’s a great person.”

As Van Wagenen put it: “One step away.”

So, how on Earth did a guy with so little judgment in terms of talent ever get a job as an agent, much less be a success as one?

Mets have been in touch with free agent CF A.J. Pollock

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen said his big move to land Robinson Cano and Edwin Diaz wasn’t the last he would make. His agressive style this offseason will continue, and free-agent CF A.J. Pollock is a name he has shown interest in.

Van Wagenen said he believes Pollock could be a good fit for the Mets, and he has been in touch with Pollock’s agent

According to USA Today’s Bob Nightengale, Pollock is looking for a five-year deal worth around $80 million—similar to what the Brewers gave Lorenzo Cain. Pollock and his team could be selling themselves high as it is the start of free agency to see what teams will bite the most.

All right, who wants to tell Brodie Van Wagenen why this isn’t a particularly good idea?

Mets GM Brodie Van Wagenen has kissed Rob Manfred’s ring

Let’s take a trip back to early last February. The hot stove season was as cold as ice. Despite spring training being less than two weeks away, scores of players remained unsigned and rumblings emerged that, perhaps, collusion was to blame.

The players were frustrated and there were reports that they were approaching the union to ask what, if anything, they could do about it. Some suggested some sort of wildcat strike or work slowdown or whatever. None of that seemed feasible or legal, but guys were getting desperate. And not just players. One agent, Brodie Van Wagenen of CAA, took to Twitter to suggest something novel along these lines: a potential spring training boycott

...

There was a lot more to that — Van Wagenen issued a whole statement attached to his tweet taking the owners to task and clearly implying that he believed the owners were acting less-than-scrupulously — but I can’t remember what it said and I can’t check because, at some point between then and now, Van Wagenen deleted it.

“And this is why having agents become general managers is a terrible idea!”

Brodie Van Wagenen reportedly favorite for Mets’ GM position

According to Jeff Passan, CAA agent Brodie Van Wagenen has emerged as the favorite for the vacant general manager position and he is reportedly expected to accept the position. It was reported yesterday that Doug Melvin was out of the running which narrowed down the field to Van Wagenen and Chaim Bloom, and now it seems as though the position is Van Wagenen’s although nothing official has been announced.

This would be an unconventional hire for the Mets who have become stubbornly risk averse recently. They rely more on “knowns” especially when it comes to their hires. Perhaps last season was a sign that their strategy was changing when they hired Mickey Callaway who did not have any managerial experience when he interviewed for the position.

Like Callaway, Van Wagenen will not have any experience in this new role but that does not necessarily mean he is unqualified. Agents have to be well versed in many different aspects of the game including analytics if they are to represent their clients to the best of their abilities. However, there is a clear conflict of interest here and Van Wagenen will have to leave his agency if he does in fact become the next GM.

Well, it’s either being a GM or becoming the villain of a 1980s slobs-versus-snobs film.
