‘He’s a legend’: Left off ALDS roster, Yankees fighting to make sure CC Sabathia gets another shot

NEW YORK — CC Sabathia dressed quietly in the corner of the Yankees clubhouse Thursday, alone with his thoughts, wondering, praying, whether he has thrown his last professional pitch.

The Yankees open the postseason Friday in the American League Division Series against the Minnesota Twins, but while Sabathia is the heart and soul of this proud franchise, he will be relegated to be a cheerleader in the dugout.

Sabathia is not on the Yankees’ Division Series roster.

And with no guarantee the Yankees will beat the Twins, let alone whether he’ll be on the roster in the next round or potentially the World Series, Sabathia’s career may have ended a few weeks earlier than he envisioned.

That would be quite a way for a career to end, wouldn’t it?

CC Sabathia sheds tears as family reads tributes

CC Sabathia wiped tears with his hands and the top of his size 56 jersey. Honored at Yankee Stadium ahead of his retirement at season’s end, his sentimental side emerged as his wife, mother and children read tributes during a video displayed on the center field scoreboard.

“This is the first time I got emotional,” Sabathia said after the New York Yankees’ regular season home finale Sunday against Toronto.

True to his nature, the 39-year-old left-hander thanked the training and clubhouse staff by name. He watched retirement ceremonies for Mariano Rivera, Derek Jeter, Jorge Posada and Andy Pettitte, but this was different.

“It’s kind of surreal,” he said. “To have a day for myself feels weird.”

CC Sabathia to Pitch Out of Bullpen for Remainder of 2019 Season

Especially with Domingo German out for the rest of the year following the domestic violence incident, it seemed possible that CC Sabathia might make another start for the 2019 Yankees down the stretch.

Well, if it happens, it won’t be in the regular season, as manager Aaron Boone has come out and said that the big lefty will come out of the bullpen for the remainder of the regular season in an effort to prepare for October.

...

Of course, if Sabathia isn’t going to remain stretched out, his only chance of coming into a postseason game is as an opener or long man out of the bullpen.

This is how a career ends
This is how a career ends
This is how a career ends
Not with a bang but with employment as a middle reliever

CC Sabathia’s postseason availability suddenly in jeopardy

NEW YORK – CC Sabathia hopes the final pitch he threw in the third inning of Friday’s 8-2 loss to Oakland won’t be his last in pinstripes.

Once again, Sabathia’s balky right knee flared up to the point that he could not continue after just three frames, leaving Sabathia, who is set to retire after the Yankees’ season ends, is in a race against the clock.

The plan is to have Sabathia’s knee drained and receive a cortisone shot on Saturday, and then the 39-year-old will have roughly a month to be ready for the postseason.

The Yankees will surely try to give Sabathia every chance to prove he’s healthy, but if that knee isn’t right, and with diminished stuff, it could be a tall task.

Not the way one wants a career to end- but, quite often, the way it does….
