CAPE LEAGUE: Host parents are the hidden stars - Sports - Wicked Local Chatham - Chatham, MA

For this, host families are given a “weekly allowance” from the team to help offset expenses, but at best, a host family might break even.

However, no one does it for the money.

“The benefits far outweigh the costs,” said Curtis. “The hardest part comes at the end of the season when the players leave. You get attached to them over the summer so it can be really difficult at the end.”
Norkevicius notes having an “enthusiasm for baseball” as the only other requirement.

“The benefits are limitless,” she said. “You have the opportunity to introduce your player to our little paradise called Cape Cod. For many of our players, this is the first time they’ve been away from home, besides at college, for an extended period of time.”

At any Commodore home game, you can easily spot the families. They usually sit on “the hill” on the first base line, and wear a button with a photo of their player or players.

“I would encourage anyone who is interested to come down to the park and talk to any of us,” said Curtis. “It is pretty easy to find us with those buttons.”

If you are looking for an opportunity to help a player in your community, please contact your local Cape League team to see if they are in need of another host family.

“Host families are a critical part of our organization,” said Curtis. “Without them, we couldn’t do what we do.”
