Pretty as a picture: Ranking the best pitch framers among MLB catchers – The Athletic

Flowers is number one.

5. Jeff Mathis, Rangers
At the season’s end, SIS presents The Fielding Bible Awards to the top defender at each position. Mathis won the award at catcher despite catching only 63 games last season. But this was not a case of giving a Gold Glove to Rafael Palmeiro for barely playing first base.

Mathis won on the merits — for being an outstanding pitch blocker and pitch framer. Regarding the latter, Mathis is elite when it comes to getting strikes on low pitches, whether they are in or out of the strike zone. He frequently beats the ball to the spot and ensures he’s catching it with momentum going toward the zone. His hands are fast.

Get to know Oregon State baseball’s star catcher Adley Rutschman

Meet Adley Rutschman, Oregon State’s star catcher who could soon be the future of Major League Baseball. The junior is coming off National College Baseball Writers Association National Player of the Month honors and could become the first pick in MLB’s first-year draft in June.

The 6-foot-2, 216 pound physical, switch-hitting backstop hit .455 over 18 games in April and recorded five doubles, seven home runs, and 23 runs batted last month. This season, he’s hitting .429 with 16 home runs and 53 RBI. Rutschman holds the OSU single-season record with 59 walks and leads the nation with a .579 on-base percentage.

So, what say we about his future?

NYT: How the Slugging Catcher Became an Endangered Species in the Majors

Bench may have been the greatest catcher ever, but [Salvador] Perez is the only other catcher to make at least six All-Star teams while winning five Gold Gloves and a World Series Most Valuable Player Award.

He is a rare modern species: a high-impact offensive catcher who plays a lot of games.

As recently as 2007, 28 players appeared in at least 95 games as a catcher. Last season that number had dwindled to 15, the fewest since the majors expanded to 30 teams in 1998. Perez did it for the sixth season in a row, but his streak will end in 2019: At the moment [Royals’ GM Dayton] Moore spoke, Perez was in Los Angeles to undergo Tommy John surgery, which will cost him the season.

MLB Tries iPitch Watch In Spring Training Games

Jesse Dougherty @dougherty_jesse
2019.03.18 10:37

MLB is at Nationals’ camp today workshopping a new communication device for pitchers and catchers. It would allow catchers to type a pitch call (with location) into a watch that is connected to a watch the pitcher is wearing on the mound. An effort to eliminate sign-stealing.

* Computers do not always work as expected.
* The r.f. spectrum at ballparks is congested already.
* Catcher’s wrist movements could tell via high-resolution camera.
* Other unintended consequences.
