Time for Major League Baseball to give Ozzie Guillen another chance

It will take an executive with a strong personality and an open mind to hire a larger-than-life manager likely to immediately change the culture of an organization.

Chicago Tribune: Why Not Hawk Harrelson for the Hall of Fame?

“But, if contribution to baseball is the main criterion for election, Harrelson belongs in the Hall of Fame because he changed the game by popularizing a revolutionary piece of equipment. Today virtually every major-leaguer uses it, as do kids at every level down to Little League, and most girls use it in softball as well.”

Help wanted! These problem positions have plagued teams for a decade

Almost every team has a problem position—you know, that spot where one season a hot prospect is starting (and failing), the next season it’s a washed-up vet, then some random Triple-A player—and the team can never get out of that cycle.

Maybe your favorite club has one, like left field for the Seattle Mariners. This one goes way back. Ken Griffey Jr. patrolled center field 11 seasons for the Mariners and played next to nine different regular left fielders, including Pee Wee Briley, Jeffrey Leonard, Kevin Mitchell, Eric Anthony, Jose Cruz Jr. and Brian “The Fast One” Hunter. The Mariners have had problems filling the position in recent years as well. Norichika Aoki was supposed to be the answer last season, wasn’t the answer, and now they’re hoping Jarrod Dyson is the answer, although even that is a short-term fix as he’s an impending free agent.

So let’s see if Seattle’s left fielders have been as awful as Mariners fans believe, and who has had it even worse over the past decade.

Did Harold Baines come within a whisker of the Hall of Fame?

Twice in his 22-year career, Baines and his fellow major leaguers were robbed of games due to labor stoppages. In 1981 and again in 1994, the owners and the MLB Players Association came to loggerheads and shut down the game. Could those two labor disputes have caused Baines the hits he needed to get to 3,000? If Baines has 3,000 hits on his ledger when he debuts on the Hall of Fame ballot in 2007, does he garner only five percent of the vote?
