Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 4-8-2016

Pittsburgh Press, April 8, 1916:

According to a Cleveland war correspondent Chick Gandil swings the heaviest bat used in the American league. His sticks weigh around 56 ounces. In the National league Larry Doyle and Jack Meyers are said to use the heaviest bats.

56 ounces is ludicrously heavy. Edd Roush’s 48 ounce bat is frequently called the “heaviest in Major League history”, but if this report is accurate, Gandil’s bats were ~17% heavier than Roush’s bats.

Primer Dugout (and link of the day) 3-16-2016

Pittsburgh Press, March 16, 1916:

[Phillies manager] Pat Moran didn’t relish a letter he received from Eppa Rixey. The tall southsider said he was unable to get a pinch teacher to take his place at his school in Alexandria, and he could not tell when he would join the Phils. Sidestepping Dixie drill is bad business. Pat wired Rixey to go to the Phillies camp at once, or be disciplined.
...
Clark Griffith was rather amused when his attention was called to a story printed in one of the Washington newspapers purporting to have come from Chick Gandil to the effect that because of his determination to smoke cigarets Gandil was sold to Cleveland. “Smoking cigarets had absolutely nothing to do with the transaction, although all my ball players know that I am opposed to cigaret smoking and that any time I catch them a fine of $10 is imposed for every offense. Gandil was sold to make room for Judge, who, in my opinion, is going to develop into a fine ball player,” remarked the Old Fox.

Griffith was right, though Joe Judge struggled (.220/.333/.298, 90 OPS+) in 1916. Over the course of his career, Judge racked up 2352 career hits, a .298 batting average, and finished in the top ten in MVP voting twice.

As for Rixey, he does sound like a colossal pain in the butt for the Phillies. If I recall correctly, this is the third year in a row he was too busy doing other stuff to show up for Spring Training. He eventually turned into a terrific pitcher, but I can see how the Phils would have been eager to get rid of him.
