Giants confident massive new scoreboard will be ready for Opening Day

SAN FRANCISCO—When members of the local media were let into Oracle Park on Friday to see upgrades, it was easy to be concerned about the scoreboard. The new version appears nowhere close to done, but the Giants are quickly making progress, and in the few minutes it took three team executives to brief the media on the ballpark, one percent of the scoreboard panels got completed.

Bill Schlough, the team’s Chief Information Officer, said there are no concerns about Opening Day. The $10 million Diamond Vision board will be fully operational by April 5, when the team returns home to host the Tampa Bay Rays. Schlough said the scoreboard will be more than two-thirds finished by Monday’s exhibition game against the A’s, and since the Giants have been testing it as they install rows, they will be able to use the completed portion Monday.

Even that will represent a significant upgrade. The new scoreboard will be the first 4K version in the majors, and will be 153 feet wide and 70 feet high. It is more than three times the size of the previous one, with twice the resolution.

Doings at China Basin- would that I had either the time or money….

San Francisco Giants host game between Paradise High, Corning Union High to lift spirits of those affected by devastating Camp Fire

SAN FRANCISCO (KGO)—It was no ordinary day. And it was no ordinary baseball game. The Paradise High School Bobcats played Corning Union High School at the San Francisco Giants’ Oracle Park on Saturday.

The deadly and devastating Camp Fire took Paradise High’s field, many homes of the players and much of their town.

That’s what made this day so special.

How Giants’ park dimensions, location can help free agent recruiting

SAN FRANCISCO — For years, Giants officials have grumbled about the impact their home ballpark has on negotiations with free agents.

It’s no secret that sluggers do not want to play 81 games at Oracle Park, and the Giants have been kept from large portions of the position player market over the past decade.

Farhan Zaidi will have to figure out a way to build an offense for his new park, but when it comes to another set of free agents, he’s not shying away from the dimensions at Third and King.

Wait- how on Earth is China Basin a less-appealing park than Candlestick was?

Unlike roster, Giants making significant upgrades to AT&T Park

SAN FRANCISCO — It has been a slow start to the offseason for the Giants’ roster, but at their home ballpark, there’s been nothing but nonstop action.

The Giants are in the process of replacing their scoreboard with a state-of-the-art version about two times the size of the current one. Team president and CEO Larry Baer compared the project size-wise to the massive Jumbotron the Dallas Cowboys put up when they built a new stadium.

“We’re going to have the best scoreboard in baseball, we believe,” Baer said. “It’s going to be the first 4K scoreboard (in baseball). We’re going to be able to show information and entertaining features that we’ve never been able to show before just because of the capacity.”

How many features do scoreboards need, exactly?
