Heyman: Boras Disputes Chipper Jones’ Story About Their Meeting

Another good read.

Jones was a great player, but he didn’t prioritize top dollar or even fair value at the start, and just wanted to stay in Atlanta (though another Hall of Fame Boras client, Greg Maddux, got his wish to stay in Atlanta a long time, as well — though not quite forever). We’ll never know if Jones recalled the story of meeting Boras precisely, but judging by how he handled things later, the conclusion that they weren’t a perfect fit for each other was probably right on.

Chipper tells another anecdote in his book, the one about when he did sign his first pro deal before hiring an adviser or agent. In his story he relates agreeing to a $275,000 deal with the Braves at an Olive Garden a day before the Braves would take him No. 1 overall (he was almost a decade away from hiring Abbott).

About that pre-draft deal, Boras said, “Free salad … and free talent. The Braves love it. That meal cost (Jones) $975,000.”

Danny Goodwin: The Most Can’t Miss Prospect of All-Time

Only one player in the history of major league baseball was good enough to be selected first in the draft… twice.  He was chosen ahead of some of the best players in baseball history. And his story shows that extraordinary talent doesn’t guarantee extraordinary success at the Major League level.
