Something Special About First Workout for New Texas Manager

Chris Woodward thinks long-term and appreciates the everyday grind of the game, having been a utility infielder over a dozen seasons and serving as a third base coach in the World Series each of the past two years.

Still, Woodward allowed himself to consider where he had come from to being a first-time manager when the Texas Rangers pitchers and catchers held their first workout of spring training Wednesday.

“There’s something special about it. To think, just kind of go back to my career, and I kind of mentioned that to the guys today,” Woodward said. “When you’ve been through so much as a player and then as a coach, just the ups and downs, you kind of start to look back and think about, ‘Man, this thing started when I was 18, could I be standing at this moment.’ ... I’m going to enjoy it.”

Will there be anything special about his last workout?

New Rangers manager has 20-somethings and revamped rotation

ARLINGTON, TEXAS
The Texas Rangers are not only young, with all those 20-something position players, they go into spring training with a first-time manager and without the retired Adrian Beltre at third base.

Chris Woodward has never been a manager. But the 42-year-old former utility infielder spent the last three seasons as third base coach for the Los Angeles Dodgers, who have something in common with the Rangers.

Los Angeles lost in the World Series the past two years. The last team to do that was Texas, which hasn’t won another playoff series since its back-to-back AL pennants in 2010 and 2011. The Rangers are now coming off consecutive losing seasons for the first time since 2008.

I never liked 20-somethings And Revamped Rotation much as a series- far too whiny and smug…..

Sources: Los Angeles Dodgers third-base coach Chris Woodward hired as next Rangers manager

Finally, the Rangers apparently have a manager.

More than six weeks after firing Jeff Banister and after interviewing more than a dozen candidates near and far, the Rangers have chosen Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach Chris Woodward, according to three industry sources.

General manager Jon Daniels, who earlier in the day addressed the team’s roster manipulations, did not respond to text requests for comment. Woodward is the third manager Daniels has hired in his 13 years with the Rangers; all of them are first-time managers.

So, any thoughts on the merits of this hire?
