Royals’ Chris Young brings the heat even with a slow fastball

Glenn Fleisig is the research director at the American Sports Medicine Institute, which has long been the leader in understanding sports-related injuries and as such has worked with many major-league teams.

He says that many of those teams openly admit that they put too much emphasis on fastball velocity. Part of it is that pitch speed is so easily quantifiable, where other factors like character and mechanics and work ethic can be vague. He hears over and over again that if two prospects are otherwise comparable, the one with more velocity will be more highly regarded because they figure to have more potential.

Fleisig thinks the teams should be taking the opposite approach.

“I’m trying to tell them that if you have two guys with the same results, with the same makeup, same injury history,” he says, “I would actually rather have the one with less velocity. Because if all those other things are equal, he has less chance of injury.”...

All of it is evidence to reinforce a point Fleisig has made to teams. A few years ago, he ran data to correlate fastball velocity and performance, as measured by ERA. He found the relationship to be non-existent. Zero. Nothing.

Maybe that surprises you. It surprises some scouts. It does not surprise Young, halfway through another season showing that fastball velocity is overrated and overpaid.

As Beltran struggles, Chris Young could be answer for Yankees | New York Post

An old player is playing like an old player. Who could have seen this coming?

Beltran, coming off a terrible 2014 in which he battled a serious right elbow injury and off to a ghastly, .171/.222/.268 start this year, deserves more rope to climb out of his hole in his second Yankees season. He doesn’t deserve endless room for error, however, especially when you see how superior the Yankees’ lineup and outfield appears with Young joining Ellsbury and Gardner.

Royals sign 6-10 righty Chris Young and expect him in pitching staff this season

Young, 35, and a former National League All-Star, signed an incentive-laden, one-year major-league contract with the Royals on Saturday. Young, a 10-year career starter with four clubs, will begin the season as a middle and long reliever and provide insurance for the starting rotation.

“He will make the team out of spring training,” general manager Dayton Moore said. “Right now, if things go to script, our rotation is probably cemented with the main five guys, so his role at this point would be as a middle guy, a long guy….

Young, who went 12-9 with a 3.65 ERA in 165 innings last season with Seattle, said there was some interest from other teams before signing for a $675,000 base salary with up to $5.325 million in bonuses.

That includes up to $1 million based on active days on the roster, up to $1.975 million based on innings pitched and up to $2.35 million based on games started in 2015.
