How Did Rick Porcello Go From Afterthought to Ace?

Five factors—not all of them under his control.

Porcello v. Verlander | Joe Posnanski

When Statcast defensive numbers become available, I expect a real shift in the defensive metrics. Even when that happens, though, the numbers will be better, but they still won’t be perfect. Those who expect perfection, both then and now, have unrealistic exceptions.

What I’m saying here is that while the defensive adjustments seem shaky and unpersuasive, the stark final WAR number — 6.6 to 5.0 WAR — is there in your face. I don’t know how many people voted for Verlander because of Baseball WAR numbers, but I suspect at least a handful did.

And I wonder how many of them realized they were voting for a defensive adjustment. I love the concept of WAR, and I appreciate the efforts to make it better all the time. And I know the Baseball Reference people do not claim that it is the perfect statistic or that anyone should base their entire award ballot on it. But WAR does have real sway in the baseball commuinity. And in this case, I think it was pretty misleading.

Update: Sean posted this response to his Twitter account.

Kate Upton has a point: Writers must do better with baseball awards voting | FOX Sports

Ken Rosenthal’s take.

No, Kate, I can’t explain it, either.

Judging voters too harshly is a slippery slope: I vehemently oppose penalizing anyone for holding an unpopular or even mistaken opinion. At the same time, it is the obligation of every voter to develop a sound rationale for his or her choices. Different answers are acceptable; it’s the process that matters.

The Tampa Bay voters, Bill Chastain of MLB.com and Fred Goodall of the Associated Press, cannot be held solely responsible for Verlander’s second-place finish, despite what Upton said in her epic Twitter rant Wednesday night. Verlander would have needed third-place votes or better from both to overcome Porcello – and seven other writers placed him fourth or fifth.

Chastain told the New York Daily News that he submitted his ballot with about a week left in the regular season; a curious choice, to say the least, when Verlander’s Tigers were still fighting for a playoff berth. Goodall, one of several AP writers who vote for BBWAA awards, does not solely cover baseball; he reports on a variety of sports in the Tampa Bay area.

Kate Upton goes on colorful Twitter rant after Justin Verlander barely loses Cy Young award

She had a good point. I don’t know how you leave Verlander off a ballot. It’s still bad form and timing.

MLB 2016 Cy Young Award winners announced | MLB.com

Scherzer, who just finished his second season with the Nationals, was an easy pick as the National League winner. But Baseball Writers’ Association of America voters had a tougher time determining the best pitcher in the American League.

Max Scherzer wins the 2016 NL Cy Young, becoming the sixth pitcher to win the award in both leagues after also winning in 2013 with Detroit

Porcello, who was 22-4 in his second season with the Red Sox, edged Verlander, the career Tiger, in the second-closest vote since 1970. He won on the strength of his second-place votes, as Verlander beat him in first-place voters 14-8.

Cy Young Award winners too close to call | MLB.com

AL finalists Rick Porcello, Justin Verlander and Corey Kluber were 1-2-3 in FanGraphs’ WAR rankings, but the margin between them was tiny. Porcello, who led the Major Leagues with 22 wins, registered 5.2 fWAR—the same as Verlander. Kluber, who finished third at 5.1, would have been the first horse eliminated in the photo finish, but only by the length of a nose.

Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester and Max Scherzer are named as the finalists for BBWAA’s 2016 NL Cy Young Award

National League finalists Kyle Hendricks, Jon Lester and Max Scherzer might be just as tough for voters to separate. You also have to wonder how much separation they achieved from the Mets’ Noah Syndergaard and late Marlins starter Jose Fernandez, who ranked 1-2 in the Major Leagues in fWAR.

MLB Awards Season, Pt 2: The Logic Escapes Me

The argument, made by several chroniclers of the game, is that there was no standout performance by a starting pitcher in the AL this year, opening the door for a standout reliever to claim the prize. The voters are literally saying “since we can’t pick between the two best pitchers in the league, we’ll give it to a third pitcher who wasn’t as good.”

In what universe does it make sense to penalize a pitcher for being the best, but only the best by a little bit? Michael Phelps gets the gold whether he wins by .10 seconds or .01 seconds.
