Grantland: Loving the Pirates Come Hell or High Water (or Arrieta)

We’ve known the likely outcome for weeks ... the Pirates have to play a one-game wild-card playoff against the Cubs, which means facing Jake Arrieta, which means certain and sudden death. Arrieta, who one-hit the Pirates last Sunday. Arrieta, who has given up four earned runs in the past nine weeks. Arrieta, whose name is wielded against Pirates fans like a curse. Arrieta, a synonym for cyanide ...

You don’t have to be a Pirates fan to think there’s something a little unfair about this.

Jake Arrieta’s dominance deserves the NL Cy Young Award

Pitching under a blood moon, Chicago Cubs right-handed ace Jake Arrieta didn’t change into some kind of beast. He was his normal every-five-days self on Sunday night, which is to say he was almost perfect, almost unhittable and the best pitcher in baseball.

Joe Maddon on Jake Arrieta’s Cy Young prospects: My vote is for Jake

It’s official. We have a Cy Young award race in the National League.

With his eight innings of a one-run ball Friday night in the Chicago Cubs 5-1 win over the Philadelphia Phillies, pitcher Jake Arrieta lowered his ERA to 1.99. That’s the magic number.

With Los Angeles Dodgers hurler Zack Greinke sporting a 1.68 mark, the two are the only starters with a sub-2.00 ERA in baseball. Arrieta needed to get into Greinke’s area code to have a chance at the award—and now he’s there.

“My vote is for Jake,” Cubs manager Joe Maddon stated after Friday’s game.

The amazing thing about Jake and his season this year is that he hasn’t won a game when he allowed 4 runs or more to score.  Only won one game when allowed 3 runs to score and got a no decision and a loss when he allowed 2 runs or less.  He only has 4 no decisions and with a little Jack Morris type luck we have a pitcher that had an outside possibility of getting 30 wins this year.

Deserved Run Average: A better way to determine the Cy Young winners | FOX Sports

I’ve been looking over the DRA figures at Baseball since they announced the stat. I like it but, from what I have learned in old research, there should be a factor differentiating between pitcher performance with nobody on and with runners on. Although the difference isn’t much from most pitchers, there are some who have a different profile. Of course, I may have missed the adjustment in their explanations.
