A’s wish list: turnaround for Sonny Gray; adding outfielders - San Francisco Chronicle

Valencia has some talent. If the A’s get rid of him, it’s tough not to believe he’s a world-class jerk.

The offense in general is an issue after the A’s finished last in runs and on-base percentage. “Let’s be frank, we have a lot of ground to make up,” Beane said.

The A’s have numerous roster questions to iron out before Nov. 18, when they must finalize their 40-man roster to protect minor-leaguers from the Rule-5 draft, and the non-tender deadline in early December. Outfielder Danny Valencia and starter Henderson Alvarez (who recently had his second shoulder surgery) are non-tender candidates. Outfielder Sam Fuld, a free agent, is unlikely to be back after season-ending shoulder surgery, although a minor-league deal is a possibility.

Valencia was among the team’s better offensive performers, but there were discussions about releasing him after his fight with first baseman Billy Butler in August, and there might not be a spot for him or enough at-bats with the A’s emphasis on youth.

“We’ll take a look at it going forward,” Melvin said. “It depends on the dynamics of what we’re trying to do. He did perform for us. Whether that position we have targeted for him is there or not, I’m not sure.”

Danny Valencia optimistic about his 2017

Valencia has put up pretty good numbers the last two years. He consistently hits the ball hard. If he can’t find regular playing time, he must be the biggest jerk ever.

A’s clubhouse fight: Danny Valencia, Billy Butler altercation details

After the rep departed, the players said, Valencia confronted Butler and told him, “Don’t you ever loud talk me in front of a rep. That was wrong,” and walked aggressively toward Butler. Butler turned around, took a couple steps toward Valencia, and according to both witnesses, said, “I can say whatever I want and your b— ass isn’t going to do anything about it.”

One player said that the men leaned in, bumped heads and then started pushing each other, Valencia started swinging and hit Butler in the temple.

A’s Billy Butler hurt by Danny Valencia in altercation, sources say

Despite facing left-handed starters Saturday and Sunday, designated hitter Billy Butler was not in the lineup for the Athletics. Manager Bob Melvin said Butler was out sick due to nausea and vomiting, though he ruled out the flu.

There seems to be more to this story than a simple illness, however. According to Susan Slusser of the San Francisco Chronicle, Butler was injured in an altercation with teammate Danny Valencia on Friday. No one with the A’s has commented on the incident. From Slusser:

“No comment,” Valencia said after the team’s 4-2 loss to the White Sox. “What happens in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse.”

Fair or not, Valencia has a reputation for being a clubhouse liability because he’s changed teams so often in his career.
