Manager Dave Roberts agrees to 4-year contract | MLB.com

On Monday, the two sides put pen to paper. Roberts inked a four-year extension that runs through 2022, the team announced, adding three years onto the contract he was already guaranteed.

MLB rumors: How Dodgers’ Dave Roberts could replace Giants’ Bruce Bochy

The Giants already made one drastic change to their franchise this offseason in hiring Farhan Zaidi away from the Los Angeles Dodgers as their new president of baseball operations. Another year from now, could they add another prominent figure from their archrival?

According to FanCred’s Jon Heyman, the Dodgers and manager Dave Roberts appeared close to a multiyear contract extension a week ago, but they now sit at a standstill, unable to come to an agreement. Roberts is said to be on vacation overseas, per Heyman, and the sides “remain far apart.”

Los Angeles picked up Roberts’ $1.1 million option for 2019, meaning he’s under contract for next season, but not beyond. If the sides can’t come to an agreement on an extension, Roberts essentially will enter next season as a lame-duck manager.

Mind you, is there any particular reason to believe that Dave Roberts is a manager you’d want to hire, rather than being some guy who was lucky enough to be part of the ride?

World Series 2018: Dodgers manager Dave Roberts booed before Game 5

Dave Roberts did not receive a warm reception before Game 5 of the World Series.

Los Angeles fans booed the Dodgers manager during pregame introductions Sunday, according to multiple reports. The Dodgers entered the matchup trailing the Red Sox 3-1 in the series.

The harsh reaction came one day after some questioned Roberts’ decision to remove starting pitcher Rich Hill with one out in the seventh inning in Game 4. The Dodgers were winning 4-0 at the time but their bullpen failed to hold the lead.

Half-surprised to see Dodger fans get this angry- most of the time, they’re leaving at that point in the game…..

Dave Roberts ripped for pulling Rich Hill in Game 4, but turns out he had a good reason for it

The problem with such second-guessing from parties not in the know is they are, um, not in the know. After the game, Roberts provided the context:

“Before the top of the seventh was going on, it was a long sixth for us,” Roberts said. “I had a conversation with Rich, and we talked about it. He said, ‘Keep an eye on me. I’m going to give it everything I have. Let’s go hitter to hitter and just keep an eye on me.’ So right there, I know Rich did everything he could, competed, left everything out there.”

Essentially, it sounds like Hill was letting Roberts know his tank was nearly empty.

The post-game second-guessing was immediate and fierce, but if a pitcher tells his manager something like what Hill appears to have said to Roberts, then the manager has to make a move. Alexander and Madson and Jansen didn’t do their jobs, but that’s on those pitchers, not on Dave Roberts.

Dodgers manager Dave Roberts got burned by sticking with Ryan Madson again

A manager can make the right move and still lose. The Dodgers aren’t losing because of Dave Roberts. They are losing because their players aren’t playing as well as the Red Sox players.

The manager gets the spotlight, but the front office runs the show now

It’s worth noting that the World Series, which opens Tuesday night at Fenway Park in Boston, features two managers who had never held the position until they accepted the jobs they currently have. Dave Roberts was a coach with the San Diego Padres when the Los Angeles Dodgers hired him the winter before the 2016 season. His performance thus far: three division titles, back-to-back National League pennants - with a world championship still a possibility.

Alex Cora was a coach when the Houston Astros won last year’s World Series, after which he took over the Boston Red Sox. All he did for a debut was win more games than any manager in the 118-year history of the franchise then open the postseason with seven victories in nine tries against a pair of 100-win teams.

So the modern baseball formula, it would seem: Build a superior roster, then hand it to someone who has never done the job.

Some thoughts on managing- I’ll leave it to the rest of you to debate how much of this is common knowledge.

The seven managerial decisions that could decide the NLCS

MILWAUKEE – The challenge is to guess right, and then hope a line drive finds a glove for no reason other than good fortune, and that’s the whole job. That, and keeping 25 men with little in common but their work clothing from inflicting permanent harm on each other. That, and agreeing with mostly everything sent down from your boss’ office. That, and appearing tranquil and not panic-stricken for the TV cameras.

That, and bearing the responsibility if any of the above happens to go wrong, the consequence being condemnation and ridicule at least until another baseball game is played, at which point it’ll be some other poor sap’s turn.

Just this week, New York Yankees manager Aaron Boone was browbeaten into admitting that on his drive home from an especially ugly splash of juju (and, granted, judgment) he tuned his car radio to ’80s on 8, a transparent appeal for compassion. And more Jack Wagner.

Only seven? I’m sure we could come up with quite a few more if we were willing.
