Marlins Lose Gordon to Thumb Injury in 14-3 Win Over Reds - The New York Times

Gordon was hurt leading off the seventh inning when he slid headfirst into first base for an infield single, the first of a record nine consecutive hits as Miami won 14-3.

Gordon will miss the All-Star Game but might be sidelined only a week or two. X-rays were negative, and there was no apparent ligament damage, the Marlins said.

FiveThirtyEight:  Chase Utley Is The Unluckiest Man In Baseball

Meet Chase Utley, the unluckiest man in baseball. The Phillies second baseman is cursed with a .115 batting average on balls in play (BABIP), meaning that about a tenth of the balls he puts on the field get him safely to base. An average BABIP mark is about .300, and while there is some variation between players, it’s usually on the order of a few dozen points, not 200.

Some have argued that Utley ought to be benched. Given his age (36) and the wear and tear second basemen face, Utley could be in a steep decline. Statcast’s batted ball statistics say otherwise. Utley’s batted ball velocity is a little below average, not elite — but below average would be an incredible improvement from Utley’s .389 OPS. (Since I started writing this article, his BABIP has already increased by 12 points and his OPS by 14.)

Here’s to Dee Gordon, Inefficient Old-School Beauty «

What are the break-even points in the current run-scoring environment? I recall reading a good article on the topic fairly recently but a quick Google search turned up empty.

Well, Dee Gordon runs the bases like a teenager drives: aggressively, quickly, and with no regard for his or anyone else’s safety. He’s attempted 19 stolen bases in 32 games this season, which is awesome, even if his 12-for-19 success rate is well below the accepted break-even point.

Who is the best player in baseball? The most overrated? We poll 117 major leaguers to find out.

These results are not binding. Unless Proposition 29 passes. And we all pray that it does.

Yes or No: I’m happy to see Alex Rodriguez back from his yearlong suspension.
Yes 41 percent
No 29 percent
I don’t care 30 percent
“He burned the union. That didn’t sit well with players, so we’ll see how that plays out on the field this year.”—American League pitcher

You’re commissioner for the day. What is the first thing you would do?
Top answer: Shorten the season 19 percent
“We get two days off a month. People with regular jobs get more days off than that!”—American League outfielder

Which player would make the most entertaining reality-show star?
“C.J. Wilson. He’s into racing cars, he travels everywhere. and he’s [married to] a supermodel.”—American League outfielder

“It’s Yasiel Puig. He’s completely insane. He’s got to be up to some wacky stuff. That would be the show to watch.”—American League pitcher

“Didn’t Madison Bumgarner bus down his cattle for spring training? And he bought his wife a baby bull as a wedding gift. You’re telling me you wouldn’t want to watch that?”—American League pitcher

“Wade Miley. It’d be like Duck Dynasty.”—American League pitcher
