How does Jacob deGrom’s 2018 Season Stack Up Against the Best in Mets’ History?

Pretty good, actually. Pretty, pretty, pr—ah, you know.

“By all accounts, Jacob deGrom is courteous with fans, and genuinely seems to appreciate the support of the Flushing faithful. He’s good-humored, modest, and acts the consummate professional. He was also the best pitcher on the planet in 2018.

So why do his teammates hate him?”

NYTimes: Met’s Jacob deGrom Won a Game, and Maybe the Cy Young

After the final pitch of his marvelous 2018 season, the normally stoic Jacob deGrom cracked a smile. He deservingly strutted off the mound after unfurling a 92-mile per hour slider that darted so abruptly it froze second baseman Ozzie Albies. The crowd honored deGrom with a rousing standing ovation.

Earlier in the eighth inning, Mets fans serenaded deGrom with shouts of “M.V.P.!” They later chanted “We want Jake” when Jay Bruce, not deGrom, stood in the on-deck circle in the bottom of the inning. And it was hard to blame them: They wanted to see more of the historic excellence deGrom had produced every fifth game this season.

In a 3-0 win over the playoff-bound Atlanta Braves on Wednesday, deGrom put the finishing touches on a season that may very well earn him his first National League Cy Young Award. He fired eight scoreless innings, allowed only two hits, walked none and struck out 10.

His season-ending statistics are jaw-dropping: a major league-best 1.70 earned run average (the sixth-lowest qualifying total since the pitcher’s mound was lowered in 1969), 269 strikeouts, and only 46 walks in 217 innings.

He allowed only 40 extra base hits all season, and only 10 home runs. It’s as fine as season as I can recall since peak Pedro.  He actually had a lower ERA than 2000 vintage Pedro, though obviously the run environments were way different.  That 1.70 ERA is the sixth best ERA of my lifetime, his 9.8 pWAR is 8th.  He earned it.  Give him the Cy Young.

Jacob deGrom vs. Pitchers at the Plate Is the Most Lopsided Matchup of 2018

From article—
That’s one successful sacrifice bunt and an 0-for-33 batting line, with 22 strikeouts and a grand total of three balls hit to the outfield. Collectively, pitchers have recorded a batting average of .000, an on-base percentage of .000, and a slugging percentage of .000.

He’s one of only a handful of pitchers in league history to strike out at least 64 percent of opposing pitcher-hitters in a season, and he already ranks fourth all time in most batters faced (34) with a .000 OPS allowed; Ron Villone (36 in 2001) and Frank Pastore (39 in 1981) are both within reach, while Masato Yoshii (57 in 1998) is likely too far away, as dwindling starter innings in 2018 mean deGrom simply hasn’t faced pitchers frequently enough to catch Yoshii.
