The bizarre brilliance of Derek Dietrich’s 2019 season

To date, Dietrich has been hit by an astonishing 25 pitches, the second most in all baseball. He’s also the owner of 28 walks on the season, as well as a career-best 19 dingers. None of those, in a vacuum, jump off the page in any sort of way, really, aside from the HBP numbers that were largely fueled by a fit of Clint Hurdle rage months back.

What’s astonishing in context, however, is that he only has 18 singles this entire season. Right now, with the season nearing its completion, Dietrich has more HBP, walks, and homers than he has singles. That’s simply unheard of.

MLB roundup: Reds’ Dietrich hits three homers

Derek Dietrich had a career-high three home runs and drove in six to lead the Cincinnati Reds to an 11-6 win against the visiting Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday night. Dietrich blasted two-run homers in the fourth, fifth and seventh innings.

The run support was more than enough for Cincinnati starter Lucas Sims in his season debut. Sims, who was recalled from Triple-A Louisville earlier in the day, was working on a shutout before giving up a grand slam to Kevin Newman in the eighth.

Sims went 7 1/3 innings, the longest outing of the season by a Cincinnati starter, allowing four runs and six hits, striking out nine and walking one.

Tucker Barnhart drove in three runs, Jose Iglesias had two hits and scored twice, and Jose Peraza homered for the Reds. Elias Diaz had two hits for the Pirates, including a two-run double in the ninth inning, and Starling Marte also had two hits.

Reds become first team in 12 years to homer on three straight pitches

After hitting eight combined homers in their first two games against the San Francisco Giants, the Cincinnati Reds did not need much to time Sunday to make it nine homers for the series.

It took them even less time to make it No. 10 and No. 11.

Eugenio Suárez, Jesse Winker and Derek Dietrich all hit back-to-back-to-back homers for the Reds in the first inning on Sunday, pouncing on Giants starter Jeff Samardzija for an early 4-0 lead.

Unfortunately for the Reds, they turned back into the Reds after the first inning….
