Tragedies Lead to Calls for Change in the Dominican Republic

Commissioner Rob Manfred said the league has “comprehensive programs” in place, from educational and developmental sessions in the Dominican all the way up to employee assistance programs and security briefings at the major-league level. MLB Players Association Executive Director Tony Clark expressed similar sentiments, adding, “Educated players make educated decisions.”

Some former players say it’s not enough.

“You can say whatever you say you have, but the results are not showing, which shows you should try harder,” said Batista, who last played in 2012. “It’s going to take more investment and care.”

Telemaco’s group aims to address the problem at the root, well before young players sign pro contracts. He will travel to the Dominican in early April, where he plans to meet with a representative from the country’s Ministry of Sports in hopes of receiving government support for Ni Uno Mas.

Next winter, Telemaco and his group plan to travel the entire country delivering their message. Current players have expressed interest in joining up.

“This is a movement,” Telemaco said.

US faces Dominican Republic in WBC ‘17 | MLB.com

It’s payback time for the United States. Team USA will send Danny Duffy to the mound. The Dominican Republic will counter with Ervin Santana in his first start of the tournament.
“It’s going to be a great game [Saturday],” Jones said. “We are going to bring what we got. We are facing Ervin Santana, somebody that is familiar with most of the players, so we will give it all we got and they are going to give it all they got. Hopefully, it’s a great game.”

Puerto Rico defeats Dominican Republic | MLB.com

Although I had to tap out again, I enjoyed most of the game. If critics want to complain about the lack of interest by American fans, maybe they should realize that it’s tough for most people to get into the tournament when a lot of the games are played at unwatchable times for people who work and live on the East Coast. I’m hardcore so I make the attempt. So, critics, cut the American fans slack for a tournament geared to the International market.

How discrimination keeps Haitians out of MLB

Baseball is not popular in Haiti itself, but as many as a million ethnic Haitians live in the neighboring Dominican Republic, where the game is ubiquitous. As the chicken waits on the table, Sano and Franklin Johnson Mateo, who serves as Sano’s adviser and facilitator, shout out examples of former and current MLB players who likely share their Haitian ancestry. They rattle off seven or eight names. The total number, Sano and Mateo agree, would shock most observers.

Many big leaguers from the Dominican, including some who are being mentioned in Sano’s living room, choose to keep their backgrounds a secret. Some ethnic Haitians go so far as to actually alter their identities on the way to the majors.

“I didn’t have to change my name, but there are so many that do,” Felix Pie, a former big league outfielder and Haitian Dominican, had told me.

Players need birth certificates to sign with a major league team and obtain a visa. Haitians in the Dominican Republic often lack them, so a player might change his identity to get the necessary documentation. Others do it to make themselves appear younger, or simply to avoid the rampant prejudice against Haitians in the country. “Dominicans make fun of Haitians,” Mateo says. “Some people feel ashamed about being Haitian.”
