Pirates’ Jung Ho Kang placed on restricted list as he awaits visa

The probability third baseman Jung Ho Kang will play for the Pirates on opening day continues to plummet. On Friday, a week after receiving a suspended sentence for his third DUI in South Korea, Kang was officially placed on the major league restricted list.

Pirates president Frank Coonelly described the move as “a procedural matter.” Kang has yet to receive his visa for travel to the United States, and there is no known deadline for that decision.

“It is neither a statement of pessimism nor optimism that Jung Ho will get back in time to report to Bradenton and prepare to be ready for opening day,” Coonelly said Saturday. “It says nothing on that topic. It just is a reflection of the reality that he is not here today, on March 11.”

Pirates’ Jung Ho Kang gets suspended 2-year jail term for crash

Pittsburgh Pirates infielder Jung Ho Kang received a suspended two-year prison sentence for fleeing the scene after crashing a car into a guardrail while driving under the influence of alcohol.

The sentence handed down Friday by the Seoul Central District Court was a heavier punishment than the 15 million won ($13,000) fine prosecutors had sought, but still clears the 29-year-old Kang to join the Pirates for the baseball season.

“I am sorry, and I am repenting a lot,” Kang said after the ruling.

Kang was previously fined twice on drunk driving-related charges in 2009 and 2011.

Report: Jung Ho Kang Charged With Fleeing Scene Of DUI Crash

According to reports from Yonhap News’ Jeeho Yoo and Korean outlet Naver, Pirates third baseman Jung Ho Kang has been charged with leaving the scene of a DUI crash in Seoul. It’s Friday in South Korea, and Kang was reportedly arrested at 2:48 a.m. local time with a blood alcohol level of 0.084 percent. That’s a shade over the legal limit in the United States, but it’s well above the 0.05 percent limit in South Korea….

According to Naver, Kang ran into a guardrail then left the scene of the crash on foot. A translated comment from a police official indicates that nobody was hurt.
