Elvis Luciano becomes youngest pitcher in Blue Jays history to record win

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. is deservedly getting all the hype for the Toronto Blue Jays, but another youngster took the spotlight on Sunday evening.

Elvis Luciano, a 19-year-old rookie reliever, set multiple records during Sunday’s 5-4 win against the Oakland A’s. Luciano became the youngest player in franchise history to record a victory while also becoming the first player born in the 2000s to earn a major league win. Ah, to be young again.

One of those trivia challenges for which I don’t know the answer:

If Luciano is the first player born in the 2000s to win a major league game, who was the first among those born in every decade of the 1900s, and when did they do so?

Elvis Luciano is MLB’s first player born in the 2000’s

Blue Jays reliever Elvis Luciano made his major league debut on Sunday against the Tigers. The right-hander gave up a hit and a walk and struck out one while tossing 1 1/3 scoreless innings of work.

More astonishingly, though, Baseball Reference points out that Luciano is the first player born in the 2000’s to reach the majors. The 19-year-old came into the world on February 15, 2000. The next-youngest player in baseball is Fernando Tatis Jr., who was born on January 2, 1999. After Tatis, it’s Juan Soto, born on October 25, 1998.

This calls for variants of the Beloit Mindset List, doesn’t it?

Blue Jays bullpen construction depends on the answers to three questions

When teams have little chance of contending, like the 2019 Toronto Blue Jays do, they rarely invest much in the bullpen.

Though the interchangeability of relievers can often be overstated, when you’re trying to put together a winning core you generally focus on position players, then starters, then relievers. Good bullpen arms aren’t easy to come by, but they aren’t as rare as good starters and they can always be found midseason if you’re making a run.

As a result, it probably should come as no surprise that the Blue Jays’ bullpen is neither expensive nor star-studded — and although the club would never say this publicly, almost every reliever they’ve assembled is far more valuable to them as a trade chip than a player in his own right.

Sadly, none of these questions have anything to do with the capital of Assyria….
