Daily Mike Trout report: First error since 2017 costly in 4-3 loss to Texas

Jumping ahead to the relevant section:

Friday: Went 1 for 4 — his 12th double of the season — with a walk in a 4-3 loss to the Rangers in the opener of a three-game series at home. He batted second and, playing center field, made his first error since 2017. A hard-hit liner bounced off him and allowed two runs to score in the seventh inning. Trout had gone 296 games since his last error.

I’d argue he’s made an error more recently than that- but whoever’s left here that’s an Angels fan probably wouldn’t agree with that sentiment….

This chaotic play serves as a microcosm for the Mets’ week

NEW YORK — The internally embattled New York Mets swept the hapless (and Harper-less) Washington Nationals this week and there are so many statistics to emphasize just how disappointing the first 50 games have been for two of the teams that were actually trying in a division that was supposed to be one of the most hotly contested. But maybe you’re more of a visual learner.

The four-game series — which started with everyone assuming Mets manager Mickey Callaway was going to get axed and ended with it looking increasingly likely that Dave Martinez’s days as the Nats’ manager are numbered — can be unfortunately illustrated by the following play from the sixth inning of Thursday’s 6-4 Mets victory. It’s not exactly emblematic — nowhere is the Nats’ bullpen imploding and there’s no direct manifestation of the Wilpons’ tiresome meddling — but it is certainly A Mood.

MLB.com Gameday described the play as follows:

Brian Dozier singles on a soft bunt ground ball to second baseman Adeiny Hechavarria. Juan Soto scores. Throwing error by second baseman Adeiny Hechavarria. Brian Dozier out at 3rd, pitcher Steven Matz to third baseman Todd Frazier.

Not sure I’d grant the play that much significance- however, I will say that it doesn’t well for the play of either team.

Will there be a worse MLB play this season than this Orioles blunder?

It doesn’t get much more O’s than this.

The American League’s worst team put on a clinic in defensive incompetence Thursday in a 14-7 loss to the Cleveland Indians.

Trailing 9-7 in the seventh inning, Baltimore Orioles reliever Richard Bleier took the mound with the bases loaded and one out.

He induced a ground ball from Indians second baseman Jason Kipnis that bounced directly to Orioles second baseman Hanser Alberto, a perfect situation for an inning-ending double play.

I’m trying to remember- headlines that seem designed to get you to say no are an exception to Betteridge’s Law, aren’t they?

Did Twins infielder trick his own teammates into committing a ridiculous error?

The Minnesota Twins committed one of the silliest errors you’ll ever see in a Major League Baseball game on Wednesday, and visual evidence suggests it was caused by an infielder who wasn’t even involved in the play.

It happened in the third inning of Minnesota’s 8-7 win against the Los Angeles Angels. Shohei Ohtani hit a sharp comebacker that Twins starting pitcher Jake Odorizzi did well to field cleanly. But that’s precisely where the good defense on this play ended.

As Odorizzi gathered and flipped to first base, everyone in the ballpark was stunned when C.J. Cron whiffed on making the catch.

How could that happen?

So, is it just dumb luck that the Twins are dominating their competition, or just the natural result when half the teams are openly not trying?
