MLB To Stream Games Live On Facebook Without Blackouts

Major League Baseball games are coming to Facebook (NASDAQ: FB). The announcement was made today by MLB Commissioner Rob Manfred at the end of the quarterly owners meetings in New York City. The deal will see a national game streamed via MLB’s Facebook page each Friday beginning with tomorrow’s (Friday. May 19th) game between the Rockies at Reds at 7:10pm ET. Other matchups will be announced at a later date.

“This is very important for us to experiment [with Facebook],” said Manfred.

All games will be streamed nationally without blackouts. Financial terms were not released.

All told there will be 20 games streamed to Facebook via a feed from a participating team’s local broadcast rightsholder.

“Baseball games are uniquely engaging community experiences, as the chatter and rituals in the stands are often as meaningful to fans as the action on the diamond. By distributing a live game per week on Facebook, Major League Baseball can re-imagine this social experience on a national scale,” said Dan Reed, Facebook’s Head of Global Sports Partnerships.
