Giants working to get GM in place as search for new manager begins

SAN FRANCISCO—As he sat at the podium Tuesday and talked about all the work ahead of him, Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi laughed while telling a story about 2014. Zaidi was a rising star in the industry and had just been hired by Andrew Friedman, a similar talent, to serve as general manager of the Dodgers.

“There was a lot of talk that this seems like a game of title inflation,” Zaidi recalled. “‘Nobody ever needed a president and a GM before, how’s this going to work?’ I feel in five years baseball has come a long way because there’s a tremendous amount of alarm that we don’t have a GM at this point. I think it shows the evolution of front offices and how sophisticated, and at times complex and involved, running a baseball operations department is.”

Giants officials got that sense every time they walked into Dodger Stadium in recent years. To get to the visiting clubhouse you have to walk past the old clubhouse, which now houses the organization’s massive analytics department. Baseball operations has become big business, and the Giants—who mostly have had the same group in place for a couple decades—plan to keep up.

After being somewhat coy about the process during the season, Zaidi came out Tuesday and made it clear he will hire a general manager. He called it a high priority and said he would move as quickly as possible, but insisted “there’s no favorite, let alone somebody who has either (the GM or manager) job in the bag.”

Sincere question:

Is it actually needed to have both a president of baseball operations and a general manager, and, if so, is it just a matter of “complexity” vaguely, or due to actual specific needs?

Zaidi set to embark on first Draft with Giants

In about 50 words
This will be a pivotal Draft for the Giants, who are looking to restock their farm system and improve their organizational depth after losing 187 games over the last two years. While the Giants rode a core of homegrown stars to three World Series championships in the first half of this decade, they have traded away recent top Draft picks and missed on others, drying up the flow of impact talent in their pipeline.

What they’re saying
Holmes had served as the A’s assistant scouting director since 2009 and will take over for John Barr, the man responsible for drafting franchise star Buster Posey with the fifth overall pick in 2008. Barr remains in the Giants’ front office, and he will be available as a resource to Holmes and the rest of the amateur scouting department this year.

“Michael, I’ve been in 10 draft rooms with him,” Zaidi said at the Winter Meetings. “A lot of successful A’s Drafts, I know how important he was to those. I think for him to inherit a staff that’s produced many big leaguers, many guys that were key members of the world championship teams, for him to have John’s counsel going forward is going to be a huge asset for him.”

Giants’ Farhan Zaidi expresses thoughts on WAR, Buster Posey’s value

Ever since the Giants hired Farhan Zaidi as their president of baseball operations this past offseason, there have been battles between talking heads arguing on the basis of traditional baseball stats and advanced metrics.

Zaidi, who earned his bachelor of science degree at MIT and his PhD at Cal Berkeley, is widely seen as a baseball mind that leans on analytics. So-called baseball fans who don’t want the game to evolve argue that he’s using too many numbers to try and change the game. At the same time, Zaidi has help lead highly successful teams with the A’s and Dodgers.

So, what are his thought on WAR (Wins Above Replacement)?

“Yeah, I think it’s a good measure on how a guy has produced in the past,” Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR. “I think it’s a nice, valuable back of the envelope calculation for how much value a specific player brought you.”

Problem is, said value for Posey more or less requires him to stay as a catcher- at this point, his value above replacement level is chiefly connected with his defensive play and position.
