Giants’ Farhan Zaidi expresses thoughts on WAR, Buster Posey’s value

Ever since the Giants hired Farhan Zaidi as their president of baseball operations this past offseason, there have been battles between talking heads arguing on the basis of traditional baseball stats and advanced metrics.

Zaidi, who earned his bachelor of science degree at MIT and his PhD at Cal Berkeley, is widely seen as a baseball mind that leans on analytics. So-called baseball fans who don’t want the game to evolve argue that he’s using too many numbers to try and change the game. At the same time, Zaidi has help lead highly successful teams with the A’s and Dodgers.

So, what are his thought on WAR (Wins Above Replacement)?

“Yeah, I think it’s a good measure on how a guy has produced in the past,” Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR. “I think it’s a nice, valuable back of the envelope calculation for how much value a specific player brought you.”

Problem is, said value for Posey more or less requires him to stay as a catcher- at this point, his value above replacement level is chiefly connected with his defensive play and position.

The numbers behind Farhan Zaidi’s busy first offseason with Giants

LOS ANGELES—It seemed a lock that at some point in his first offseason with the Giants, Farhan Zaidi would deal bullpen depth for a starting outfielder. The new president of baseball operations was even open about the calls he was getting on guys like Will Smith and Tony Watson, along with his desire to deal for outfield help.

On Thursday, Smith, Watson and the rest took their place in the bullpen. Connor Joe and Michael Reed started in the outfield corners. That’s not what was expected.

“It was a deep reliever market in free agency this offseason, and we liked our relievers—they weren’t kind of just fodder for us to trade and acquire other pieces,” Zaidi said when discussing the roster Thursday. “A deal like that certainly made sense on paper, but we didn’t line up on anything that made sense for us.”

That doesn’t mean it was quiet on the transaction wire. Zaidi came up short on his high-profile pursuit of Bryce Harper and didn’t really dip into the rest of the free agency market much, but he certainly kept busy. On Opening Day, there were 12 new faces on the 40-man roster.

In case you’ve ever been curious, a consideration of the moves a GM can make during a single offseason.

Farhan Zaidi believes Giants bullpen can be one of baseball’s best

SAN FRANCISCO—The belief throughout much of the offseason was that Farhan Zaidi would trade his best relievers in order to get pieces that could help the Giants win in future years. Recently, Zaidi put his own twist on that plan when asked if he could still swing deals centered around bullpen arms.

“It definitely is a position of depth for us,” he said. “We’ll kind of continue to listen because I think it’s a relative position of depth, but I think for us to be successful with the composition of this club, we’ll have to have one of the best bullpens in baseball.”

The Giants are not on anybody’s list of contenders, and they haven’t significantly upgraded a club that’s lost 187 games the past two seasons. But that also doesn’t mean they’re raising the white flag in March, especially not Bruce Bochy’s last one with the club, and Zaidi believes the bullpen can help keep this team in the race.

Ah, spring- when hope springs eternal….

Farhan Zaidi On Giants’ Offseason, Bumgarner - MLB Trade Rumors

Some interesting tidbits.

From a hot-stove perspective, Zaidi noted that “we’re hopeful to have an announcement on a signing or a trade here in the next couple of days,” so some type of transaction could be imminent now that we’re more than two days removed from the interview.

...

Zaidi reiterated that the Giants aren’t going into a full rebuild, saying “We’re going to do what we can within the constraints we have to put a competitive ballclub out there” in 2019.  Winning the division “is always going to be a goal,” even as Zaidi admits the Dodgers are still the team to beat at this point.

A recent report from MLB.com’s Jon Morosi linking the Brewers and Giants in trade talks about Madison Bumgarner was “overblown,” in Zaidi’s words, as Bumgarner is “a huge part” of San Francisco’s plans to compete next season.  “We spent this offseason having to be realistic with where we are and being willing to listen on anything,” Zaidi said. “But it doesn’t change the fact that Madison Bumgarner is a very central cog to this team.  Nobody is making any outgoing calls on Madison Bumgarner.”

Why Giants are excited about South African-born prospect Kieran Lovegrove

You probably missed it, but the Giants made an under-the-radar move late in November that has boom or bust potential.

Across the minor-league transaction wire, the Giants signed 24-year-old reliever Kieran Lovegrove, a move that can bring major results in the future. Just ask president of baseball operation Farhan Zaidi.

“He’s a terrific arm, a terrific prospect,” Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR.

If he makes it to the Show, he’ll be the second South African-born player to make it.

MLB free agency: Giants have extensively scouted pitcher Yusei Kikuchi

The first free-agent pitching domino fell Tuesday when former D’backs ace Patrick Corbin reportedly agreed to a massive contract with the Nationals.

One day prior to the Corbin news though, another interesting piece to the puzzle was unraveled in the pitching market. Star Japanese left-hander Yusei Kikuchi was officially posted by the Seibu Lions.

“He’s an accomplished guy from over there,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR. “We have scouted him pretty extensively, as other teams have. A lot of players from over there (Japan) have a preference for being on the West Coast just for proximity, so that puts us in a pretty good situation.”

Mind you, if the Giants sign him, I have the feeling he’ll turn out like their free-agent signings so often have traditionally….
