Farhan Zaidi believes Giants bullpen can be one of baseball’s best

SAN FRANCISCO—The belief throughout much of the offseason was that Farhan Zaidi would trade his best relievers in order to get pieces that could help the Giants win in future years. Recently, Zaidi put his own twist on that plan when asked if he could still swing deals centered around bullpen arms.

“It definitely is a position of depth for us,” he said. “We’ll kind of continue to listen because I think it’s a relative position of depth, but I think for us to be successful with the composition of this club, we’ll have to have one of the best bullpens in baseball.”

The Giants are not on anybody’s list of contenders, and they haven’t significantly upgraded a club that’s lost 187 games the past two seasons. But that also doesn’t mean they’re raising the white flag in March, especially not Bruce Bochy’s last one with the club, and Zaidi believes the bullpen can help keep this team in the race.

Ah, spring- when hope springs eternal….

Farhan Zaidi On Giants’ Offseason, Bumgarner - MLB Trade Rumors

Some interesting tidbits.

From a hot-stove perspective, Zaidi noted that “we’re hopeful to have an announcement on a signing or a trade here in the next couple of days,” so some type of transaction could be imminent now that we’re more than two days removed from the interview.

...

Zaidi reiterated that the Giants aren’t going into a full rebuild, saying “We’re going to do what we can within the constraints we have to put a competitive ballclub out there” in 2019.  Winning the division “is always going to be a goal,” even as Zaidi admits the Dodgers are still the team to beat at this point.

A recent report from MLB.com’s Jon Morosi linking the Brewers and Giants in trade talks about Madison Bumgarner was “overblown,” in Zaidi’s words, as Bumgarner is “a huge part” of San Francisco’s plans to compete next season.  “We spent this offseason having to be realistic with where we are and being willing to listen on anything,” Zaidi said. “But it doesn’t change the fact that Madison Bumgarner is a very central cog to this team.  Nobody is making any outgoing calls on Madison Bumgarner.”

Why Giants are excited about South African-born prospect Kieran Lovegrove

You probably missed it, but the Giants made an under-the-radar move late in November that has boom or bust potential.

Across the minor-league transaction wire, the Giants signed 24-year-old reliever Kieran Lovegrove, a move that can bring major results in the future. Just ask president of baseball operation Farhan Zaidi.

“He’s a terrific arm, a terrific prospect,” Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR.

If he makes it to the Show, he’ll be the second South African-born player to make it.

MLB free agency: Giants have extensively scouted pitcher Yusei Kikuchi

The first free-agent pitching domino fell Tuesday when former D’backs ace Patrick Corbin reportedly agreed to a massive contract with the Nationals.

One day prior to the Corbin news though, another interesting piece to the puzzle was unraveled in the pitching market. Star Japanese left-hander Yusei Kikuchi was officially posted by the Seibu Lions.

“He’s an accomplished guy from over there,” Giants president of baseball operations Farhan Zaidi said Wednesday on KNBR. “We have scouted him pretty extensively, as other teams have. A lot of players from over there (Japan) have a preference for being on the West Coast just for proximity, so that puts us in a pretty good situation.”

Mind you, if the Giants sign him, I have the feeling he’ll turn out like their free-agent signings so often have traditionally….

Determining Madison Bumgarner’s future will be Farhan Zaidi’s first Giant decision

The ink on Farhan Zaidi’s contract as the new San Francisco Giants general manager was barely dry Wednesday when he was asked the question weighing on the mind of every Giants fan.

Is it possible, and perhaps even necessary, that he seeks to trade the franchise’s longtime ace and multiple time World Series hero, Madison Bumgarner?

The question itself was as straight forward as it gets. As for the response? It was not surprisingly vague.

Mind you, with pitchers, the future tends to be something beyond the ken of any general manager….

This changes everything: Giants president Farhan Zaidi agrees to a five-year deal – The Athletic

Friedman and Zaidi may be competing for the same guys.

And how’s this for intrigue? Before the Giants and Dodgers meet on the field next season, Zaidi and Friedman could find themselves in a more immediate form of competition. Zaidi is almost certain to hire a GM. Friedman, unless he decides to keep Zaidi’s former chair empty, will be in the market for one, himself. And here’s betting their lists will have some overlap.

Will Zaidi seek to renew with Billy Owens, his former colleague with the A’s? Or would he be attracted to someone more like-minded with which to collaborate and spark ideas? Would he value an executive with administrative skills? Or a more traditional scouting background? Is it possible that the Giants already have vetted some of the possible candidates (Kim Ng, Jason McLeod, Chaim Bloom, Matt Arnold, Mike Elias, etc.)?

Zaidi should find no shortage of qualified people eager to work in a front office where out-of-the-box thinking will be encouraged.

MLB Rumors: Giants Interested in Farhan Zaidi for President of Baseball Ops.

The San Francisco Giants have reportedly expanded their search for a president of baseball operations to their archrivals.

According to Jon Morosi of MLB Network, San Francisco is “interested” in Los Angeles Dodgers general manager Farhan Zaidi for the role. While Morosi cautioned it is “unclear if the scenario is viable,” he noted the interest could be the reason San Francisco’s search has been somewhat slow.

This comes after Bruce Levine of 670 The Score reported the Giants interviewed Chicago Cubs senior vice president Jason McLeod.

I’m getting confused at this point- would this be a promotion, a lateral move, or a demotion?
