Padres star rookie Fernando Tatis Jr. will ‘most likely’ miss rest of year with back injury

PHILADELPHIA – San Diego Padres shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr. was placed on the 10-day injured list on Friday with a back injury that “most likely” will end his season, according to manager Andy Green.

The 20-year-old Tatis, a Rookie of the Year candidate, is batting .317 with 13 doubles, 22 homers and 53 RBI in 84 games. Green said the injury was the result of “common usage” and that it would require rest to heal.

“It’s disappointing, obviously,” Green said. “We’re going to do what we can to take care of him, and we expect him to be a huge part of what we’re doing going forward. It’s been really tough for him the last couple of days to swallow. It’s a tough blow.”

Green said Tatis will be re-evaluated in three weeks.

Tatis Jr. hits 1st MLB HR; dad will get ball

Merrill Kelly threw a belt-high fastball to Fernando Tatis Jr. in the sixth inning Monday night. Tatis—with that simple, yet violent right-handed swing the Padres have dreamed on for years—turned on it with authority. The baseball soared deep into the left-field seats, and Petco Park rose in unison.

Did Padres stars lobby owner to promote top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr.?

We’ve reached a contentious point in the relationship between Major League Baseball’s players and owners. The tensions have risen so fast and so furiously following consecutive winters of jilted free agents, that many fear a work stoppage is inevitable once the current collective bargaining expires in December 2021, and perhaps even sooner.

But a new report has given us some hope, slight as it might be, that finding common ground is at least possible if the two sides are willing to sit down, talk, and even more importantly, listen.

ESPN’s Jeff Passan reports that’s exactly what happened when San Diego Padres stars Manny Machado and Eric Hosmer recently took owner Ron Fowler out to dinner. The players were there to talk business, the report says. The business of winning. To do that, they felt Fowler had to break away from a common practice used by his fellow owners, so they made a proposal.

Interesting piece, with some points of particular interest given what we’ve seen in the sport in the last few years.

Top prospect Fernando Tatis Jr. to be on Padres opening-day roster, reports say

While many MLB teams shy away from having their top prospects start the season in the majors, the San Diego Padres seem to be going in the opposite direction.

According to several media reports, shortstop Fernando Tatis Jr., 20, who has never played a game above the Class AA level, will be on the Padres’ 25-man roster on opening day.

The news comes a day after 23-year-old right-hander Chris Paddack, who also hasn’t played above Class AA, was announced as the starting pitcher for San Diego’s fourth regular-season game on Sunday against the San Francisco Giants.

Padres management has clearly gone mad with power! Run, everyone, run!!!!

Report: Manny Machado will accommodate Padres’ top prospect with move back to third base

Manny Machado just signed the biggest free agent contract in the history of North American sports. And yet, he likely won’t ever be playing his favored position again if the San Diego Padres’ plan works out.

After spending a full year playing shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles and Los Angeles Dodgers, the Padres’ new $300 million man has agreed to move back to third base for his San Diego tenure. The reason why: Fernando Tatis Jr., widely considered the top shortstop prospect in baseball.

That might be an unexpected development for some, but it’s definitely welcome news for those who miss Machado’s absurd web gems at third base and cringed at his defensive numbers in 2018. And it’s also telling just how highly the Padres and the rest of baseball think of Tatis.

Well, that saves us from that nightmare, it appears….
