Fielder Jones Newsbeat
Wednesday, January 30, 2013
Tacoma Times, January 30, 1913: Fielder Jones is considered the wealthiest ex-ball player living. He made a fortune in baseball because Charley Comiskey believes in paying men who deliver the goods, and Jones invested wisely, so that he was able to refuse an offer of $15,000 a year to manage a major league club. He’d have taken the offer if the owner had agreed to sell him a large block of the club stock.
Whoa, whoa, whoa. Stop the clock. “Charley Comiskey believes in paying men who deliver the goods”? This is a guy who was so cheap, he wouldn’t even pay for his team’s uniforms to be cleaned.
