SEC files fraud charges related to Curt Schilling video game company

The Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) has filed charges against Wells Fargo and a Rhode Island state agency for defrauding investors when it came to investing in a video game company.

The regulator announced Monday that it was filing civil charges, arguing that the entities failed to inform investors about the financial situation of 38 Studios, a video game company started up by former Boston Red Sox pitcher Curt Schilling.

The litigation, which is ongoing, is the latest in a tumultuous series of events around 38 Studios, which went bankrupt in 2012 and was eventually sued by the state of Rhode Island after it defaulted on debt payments.

New Jersey man pleads guilty to forging Mets COO Jeff Wilpon’s signature in $3.5M business scam

Maybe Fred Wilpon can use this defense to get out of the Bobby Bonilla contract?

A New Jersey fraudster pleaded guilty Thursday to forging Mets chief operating officer Jeff Wilpon’s signature in an office equipment leasing scam.

Michael Conway swung and missed on a $3.5 million scheme to deceive lenders by inflating the terms of lease agreement that his company Choice Office Solutions had made with clients, including the Mets.

“I made a number of false statements in order to induce them to send me money,” Conway, 40, told Judge William Kuntz in Brooklyn Federal Court.

Last March, Conway emailed a lender a letter on Mets letterhead which appeared to be signed by Wilpon authorizing contracts up to $1 million — but Wilpon’s name was misspelled “Jeffery,” according to court papers.
