LEADING OFF: A’s winning streak on line in suspended game

SO, WHERE WERE WE?

Before their regularly scheduled matchup in Oakland, the Tigers and Athletics will resume a game that was suspended May 19 at Detroit with the A’s leading 5-3 in the bottom of the seventh inning. Back then, the A’s were in the middle of putting together their first 10-game winning streak since 2006. But that could get wiped away if Oakland can’t close out the May 19 game against Detroit. If the A’s hang on, the winning streak will go to 11 games. If the Tigers rally to win, Oakland’s streak from that stretch will only be considered a seven-gamer. Center fielder Ramon Laureano is expected to come off the injured list for the A’s and play in the second game.

OPPORTUNITY KNOCKS

Minnesota has a chance to widen its 6½-game lead in the AL Central over Cleveland and perhaps all but salt away the division title when the Indians come to town for a three-game series. Michael Pineda (11-5, 4.11 ERA) pitches the opener for the Twins, back home from an 8-2 road trip. Adam Plutko (6-4, 4.53) goes for Cleveland.

Presumably, this suspended game won’t be over in a few minutes, unlike the last one.

LEADING OFF: Mets-Nats back after wild game, Springer hurt

SHAKE IT OFF

The Mets and Nationals are set for a matinee in Washington after playing a wild one Tuesday night. The Mets scored five runs in the top of the ninth to lead 10-4 before the Nats rallied all the way back in the bottom of the inning, capping the rally with a three-run, game-ending homer from Kurt Suzuki. The Nationals/Expos franchise had never won a game after trailing by at least six runs in the ninth or later.

“That’s hard to do even in a Little League game,” said dejected Mets outfielder Brandon Nimmo.

Right-hander Zack Wheeler (9-7, 4.41 ERA), who is 0-2 with a 7.94 ERA in four starts against Washington this season, is set to start for New York. He’ll face righty Anibal Sanchez (8-6, 3.80).

So, the bullpens gave up a combined twelve runs in the ninth inning- and the solution is relying more on relievers?

George Springer Carted Off After Smashing Head Into Outfield Wall During Acrobatic Catch

Every time an outfielder tracks a ball to the outfield wall, there’s a small but not insignificant chance of something violent happening. Perhaps not quite on the scale of the outfielder in the baseball blooper reel from The Naked Gun, but danger is inherent anytime someone sprints toward a wall, especially if they can’t look at the wall because they’re tracking a flying object. Sometimes there’s a sweet catch; sometimes there’s a gnarly impact; sometimes there’s both.

Another tale concerning outfielders and one of their greatest nemeses.

Houston Astros expecting bad news on George Springer injury

The Houston Astros beat the defending World Series champion Boston Red Sox on Friday night, but the win came at a potentially big cost.

George Springer, the Astros outfielder having an MVP-caliber season, left the game at Minute Maid Park in the eighth inning after suffering a left leg injury. Springer slid to catch a fly ball off the bat of Red Sox’ shortstop Xander Bogaerts in foul territory and immediately came up limping before walking off the field.

Manager A.J. Hinch said after the game Springer will be evaluated and is likely headed to the IL, but he’s expecting the worst.

“I’m not looking forward to the diagnosis, to be honest,” Hinch said. “It doesn’t look very good.”

George Springer hits 29th career leadoff homer

Astros outfielder George Springer is on absolute fire. Since April 30 and prior to Sunday afternoon’s game against the Rangers, Springer was batting .381 with five homers and 11 RBI in 51 plate appearances. Of those five homers, two led off the Astros’ half of the first inning.

Springer kept it going on Sunday, belting a leadoff home run to left field in the bottom of the first inning off of Adrian Sampson. That marked Springer’s 29th career leadoff home run and his third in just the last week. In just his sixth season, he is more than halfway to Craig Biggio’s Astros record of 53 leadoff dingers. Springer would hit successfully in his next three trips to the plate as well, adding an RBI single in the second, and two more singles in the fourth and fifth innings.

On the one hand, he’s already over a third of the way to the record- on the other hand, it’s a record held by RICKEY!, so it may be trickier to get to than it may seem at the moment.

Report: George Springer received unspecified punishment for use of homophobic slur

During a seven-game homestand that included a three-game set versus the Twins, Astros outfielder George Springer was seen shouting a homophobic slur at umpire Ángel Hernández. Dawn Ennis of Outsports reports that Major League Baseball punished Springer in an as yet unknown way for his outburst.

On April 23, in the bottom of the eighth inning facing Tyler Duffey, Springer took a called strike three that he thought was ball four. Unhappy with Hernández’s call, Springer tossed his bat and argued with the umpire, appearing to say, “Ángel! That’s the same pitch you just called a ball.” Once he returned to the dugout, TV cameras happened to be on Springer when he clearly yelled, “F–king c–ksucker!” at Hernández.
