Trout got extension but longer deal was broached

Los Angeles Angels superstar Mike Trout was that rare young positional superstar who took a long-term deal with his team, and sources say the idea of a “lifetime” 14- or 15-year deal was even mentioned in talks with the Angels before he and the team settled for a straight six years that brings him to free agency at barely 29….

After Trout’s suggestion of a possible lifetime deal wasn’t immediately accepted by the Angels (word is, he preferred shorter if not very long), the sides wound up compromising on six years when he started at a deal of four or five years and they wanted something along the lines of seven, eight or most preferably nine. Again, the main issue there is wanting to be a free agent in his 20s, and he easily accomplished that with the six. Anyway, this was an exception to the trend, and that extends to the next level of great player.

George Springer was approached a couple years ago, and didn’t take the deal. And the Cubs tried multiyear deals with Willson Contreras and some other young players, and like Bryant, all of them are going year to year. It may work out for all of the stars around baseball going year to year, but one management person warns, “At least one of them will wind up regretting not taking the deal, and he’ll be stuck.”
